Assignment and Tasks
Answer the questions listed below as part of this assignment
1. Living cells need certain characteristics in order to survive. Discuss each characteristic and its
importance to the cell; e.g. reproduction, sensitivity, self-reliance, nutrition, respiration, energy
2. Using diagrams imported from the internet, explain the difference between prokaryotic,
eukaryotic cells and akaryotic cells. Explain the impact of viruses on prokaryotic and eukaryotic
cells giving examples of diseases caused (1.2)
3. Discuss the role of the plasma membrane, cell organelles and nucleus in a eukaryotic cell giving
examples of their functions (1.3)
4. Substances move through the plasma membrane through different (active/passive) transport
processes, explain each type of transport mechanism; noting the substance that is transported
through the plasma membrane and its role (2.1)
5. The cell organelles use nutrients for a variety of functions; energy production, growth and
movement, explain how nutrients contribute to these different functions (2.2)
6. The synthesis of protein is an important function carried out in the cell. Explain the phases of
protein synthesis noting the role of nucleic acids (DNA/RNA) in this process (2.3, 2.4)
7. Stem cells are used in stem cell research on Dementia and Parkinson`s disease. Explain how embryonic stem cells differ from adult stem cells. Explain the process of cell differentiation
during embryonic and foetal development giving examples of differentiated cells (3.1)
8. Cell mitosis is important in the generation of new cells to replace worn out or damaged cells. Explain interphase noting the importance of certain factors in this phase of mitosis. Explain in
detail the other phases of mitosis (3.2 3.3)
9. Cancer cells divide without control over cell division. Compare and contrast the difference
between cancer cells and normal body cells (3.4)
Additional Assignment Guidance
Please word process your answers. Use a title and contents page. Please ensure all of your pages are numbered and that they have your name and student ID on each page. Please submit onto `Turnitin`. Your tutor will inform you when you can submit the assignment onto epearl. The total percentage for `Turnitin` should be no more than 15%, each section should be under 5%. Please format your paragraphs, and use 2.0 line spacing, word processing on one side of the page. You should use font size 12, either in aerial or Times New Roman. Please ensure your work is proof read, and presentation of information is neat, and print quality is good. The word count for this summary is 4000 words; the word count must be stated clearly at the end of the summary and should not include title and contents page or the bibliography. You cannot go over this word limit. Quotes used are not included in the word count. Please provide a reference list at the end of your summary identifying sources of information which conforms to the Harvard referencing system. Images used must be reference
