Most research articles are subdivided into sections including an Abstract (or Summary), Introduction, Results, Discussion, and Methods. This relatively brief paper has an Abstract and the remaining sections combined into one narrative. The Methods, however, are included only in the online-only supplement. You are welcome to consult the supplement (it has some cool movies) but you should not need it to formulate your article.
In your answer you must provide: (1) the background for the paper’s findings including some facts and figures on the pandemic and the biology of SARS-CoV-2 and related coronaviruses; (2) a summary of the main findings of the paper; and (3) remarks indicating why you think the work is significant and important and what the next steps for this work should be. Don’t be afraid to highlight any unanswered questions that this work leaves behind. Also, be sure to include a title that would catch the reader’s interest.
While it is challenging to read a scientific paper, you should be able to understand the findings based on what you have learned in class. It is not necessary to understand each and every line in the paper or the finer details of how the experiments were done. However, you are encouraged to seek out other resources to fill in any gaps in your understanding.
Note that “The Scientist” is intended for a scientifically literate audience. Therefore, you should assume that those who read your article have completed at least Grade 12 Biology. However, your audience is not necessarily familiar with the methods employed. Let these considerations guide how you present the information.
