Reflect upon the four readings and two videos for this week and consider the following questions:
If you were participating in the “income parade” and the “wealth parade” described by Gregg Barak and his colleagues in their piece called “Understanding Class and Economic Privilege,” at what time would you pass by? What do these social/economic positions mean to you and how do they affect your beliefs regarding class stratification and economic inequality in U.S. society?
More broadly, in what ways do you think that social class (also known as socio-economic status) is important for understanding crime and the criminal justice system? To answer this question, consider the starkly different treatment that typically poor street criminals receive (as described by the “Jailed for Being Broke (Links to an external site.)” piece and the To Prison for Poverty video) from the way that we treat wealthy white collar offenders (as described by the “Why Isn’t Wall Street in Jail? (Links to an external site.)” piece and the clip of Matt Taibbi). Based on what you read and learned, why do you think it is that we treat these two types of offenders and crimes so differently? Do you agree with Jeffrey Reiman, when he says in his piece called “The Rich Get Richer and the Poor Get Prison,” that the current criminal justice system works to maintain a distinct class of criminals? Why or why not?
