For this assignment, you will write your essay on one of the options listed below. You may pick which one just let me know
Be sure your essay crystallizes your main ideas in a clear and compelling thesis. Be sure to cite evidence from the text to demonstrate a complex understanding of the book, and draw your ideas together in a coherent conclusion. Because this is a formal essay, do not use personal pronouns or anecdotes. Cite all sources you access in a Works Cited page, formatted according to the guidelines set forth in the English Department Composition Handbook.
Trace a Symbol or Theme through the text and find three ways in which the symbol or theme changes during the story. You might choose the themes of deception, father figures, or European-style aristocracy, or choose from symbols like the river, animals, or nature. In each body paragraph, track how the symbol or theme changes, and how this illuminates the meaning of the whole work.
Search the text for examples of Huck’s growth in terms of his conscience and sense of morality. Contrast this with the examples he meets along the way, such as religion, the Widow Douglas, Colonel Grangerford, the Duke and the King, etc. In each case, trace the change that happens and what it means, and how these meanings can illuminate the meaning of the whole work.
Examine the setting as a metaphor for Huck and Jim’s journey in the novel. The river is especially important, but so are the towns, boats, and other places he visits. Look particularly at the descriptions and changes, and connect the descriptions of the setting to the larger themes of the novel.
How does the novel demonstrate what it means to be American? Remember that this is a work of satire, so identify Twain’s primary targets of criticism, but also discern his objects of hope and admiration. Keep the essay focused on the novel rather than on current events or the events of Twain’s time – look for themes that can illuminate both what Twain despises as well as what he admires about the American character.
