Primary Source Analysis

 CAPA: Context, Audience, Purpose, Argument

 Context – what was going on at the time the source was written?

 Audience – to whom was the author writing? Private or public?

 Purpose – why was the author writing this source?

 Author – What influences the author’s point-of-view in terms of tone, style of writing, tactics of persuasion, assumptions, etc.? Is the author biased? NOTE: This is more about the author than it is about the text.

In at least a few good-sized paragraphs, I would like you to comment on this source using the CAPA guidelines listed above. Keep in mind that this document is an example of what we call a primary source; that is, one that was produced from an earlier time period, such as as a poem, diary entry, song, speech, etc. Although you are welcome to quote a few key phrases to back up your claims, the more that your response is in your own words, the better. If your work reads as though it came verbatim from my lecture, the textbook, or any other source, that will limit your grade. You can use the lectures and the textbook, but be sure to put your comments in your own words or else quote them directly. Once you have prepared your remarks, attach them to the digital dropbox below.
