4. Avoid using too many words. Simplify-
5. Read aloud to yourself and you will find many of your mistakes
6. It is extremely rare to write a paper and not have to rewrite
7. Avoid long quotations (you will be penalized for this)
8. Do not use the term illegal — there is a movement among the major media not to use the term because it is offensive to many people…. Use undocumented, unauthorized, without papers
9. Skip the line between the title of the paper and the body
10. Citation Chicago Manual of Style with InText citations – example “The film is considered groundbreaking” (Smith 45).

12. The subject of sentence needs to be near the beginning of the sentence. If it’s about “death” – a common theme in your papers, “death” has to be at the beginning not the end of the sentence
13. At the top of the paper write the question/theme you chose to discuss
14. Avoid slang, profanity –and contractions. Avoid “a lot” – “kids” – can’t. won’t
15. Use Spell Check
16. Use Grammarly if it is available on your Word Program. If it keeps telling you that you are writing in past tense, skip those recommendations, however, it will tell you where other things are wrong, if a word is missing, or you are using the wrong adjective etc.

To make it very clear what is necessary to make an A paper, this rubric informs students how many points are added when written well and how many are deducted when an essay is not written carefully. Your best chance for an A is to write one or two drafts before you write the final draft you submit. Read it aloud to yourself. Have a friend read it. Please do not single space. All this helps.

-1 – 3 misspelled words in the entire paper

-10 – 6 misspelled words in entire paper

-1 every time a film, book, magazine, journal, or newspaper title is not italicized

-1 every time a reference is written in all caps

-1 every missing comma

-10 if paper is single spaced

-7 for each academic source that is missing (three are required)

-30 If the paper sounds confusing and not logical

-5 for every in text citation of a direct quote that is missing a page number

-5 for every word used that is considered very informal or “slang” (i.e. a lot, cops, kids, etc)

-5 for every word of profanity used

-10 for the essay being 100 words less than the minimum required number (1200)

-20 for the essay being 200 words less than required number

-30 for being 300 words less than required

-40 for being 400 words less (10 points extra taken off for every 100 words missing from word count, so if the essay is only 500 words, 70 points will be taken off)

-30 for listing a reference in the Work Cited page and not actually using it in the paper (that is misrepresentation)

-1 for every contraction used (isn’t, don’t, won’t)
