Choose a Bioethical issue (see topics guide). Research it by using at least four sources. Any combination of sources is acceptable; e.g. journals, books, magazines. For Internet sources, Full-text articles are preferred. The dot-gov. & dot-edu. sites are usually quality sources….however be cautious with dot-com. & dot-org. sites as they often lack objectivity. Yes, many coms & orgs are quality reliable sources, and of course you can use them, but check them out more carefully. The use of sacred or religious literature as a source is not acceptable (e.g. Koran, Hebrew Bible, Christian Bible, etc.). Review the “Introductory Remarks” document for reasons why. Do not rely upon the course text as a source (and use no more than one encyclopedia source – Wikipedia is OK for one). Do not use the same source more than once. For example: using two different issues of Time magazine will be considered as one source. Try to find fairly recent sources (within last 10 years or so depending on topic). Provide background (historical) information on your topic – how has it developed over time? What are the different views of the issue (pros versus cons)? Clearly define and present each view. Each side of the issue must be objectively and equally presented. Parity is important…..STAY OUT OF THE ARGUMENT!! If the reader (that would be me) can discern where you are coming from personally in presenting a controversial topic, then the assignment did not meet this basic requirement.
Grading is based upon depth of information and on how fairly all perspectives are presented. If you’d like…save the last 75 words (or less) of the report to present your thoughts or position.
Information in paper must be cited and documented (any form is acceptable). Document sources of important information throughout the body of the paper. When citing sources in body of paper, include page number (or location) where information was extracted. Do not copy verbatim from a source. Quoting or copying from a source without precise documentation is plagiarism. Refrain from extensive quoting of a source, even if it is cited and documented. Quotes are to be limited in use, only relied upon to support a point, not to present the point. Using your own words to present information is important – it demonstrates that you actually understand the information.
Make a detailed resource page with specific information that the reader can easily access the sources to review how they were used. Give the exact URL with enough identifying information that upon review it can be located immediately. For this MLA or APA style is not needed. At least four sources are required. If a source is not easily accessible, it will not qualify as a source.
The paper should be at least 1200 to 1300 words.
NOTE: Projects must be submitted through CANVAS. They will not be accepted via Email because all project submissions are automatically routed through the “ TurnItIn”” plagiarism detection program in Canvas.
