Lab Project Survey Administration

Overview
This document is a supplement for the Lab Project Method Assignment. Please read it carefully for detailed instructon on how to administer your survey as required for this portion of your Lab Project. You may choose to administer your survey in person (face-to-face), or do so remotely using email or social media. Please note this assignment is for educational purposes only, and thus has constraints to remain compliant with ethical standards in our field.

Instructions
A. In Person Administration
You may administer the survey in person to groups such as a Sunday school class, small group, book study, a group of family members, friends, coworkers, and so on AS LONG AS their anonymity can be assured. This means that you, as the researcher, cannot pair results with any one individual, and no identifying information of any kind must appear on the survey. If administering the survey in person, follow these steps:
1. Print as many copies as you think you will need of your approved survey (Note it is typically advantageous to make it clean and professional, and if possible, to fit it on one side of one sheet of paper).
2. Ask for volunteers who are at least 15 years old who would like to participate in a short anonymous survey; be sure that they have a quiet area, a writing surface, and a writing utensil. It is asked that you NOT administer this survey to strangers (for example, at a shopping mall) as this would require additional training, procedures, and IRB approval.
3. Read the written disclosure and directions at the top of the survey aloud to participant(s). For your benefit, they are repeated here:

Disclosure: I am asking you to complete this survey as part of the requirements for my statistics project in a graduate level psychology course. Your answers will remain completely anonymous. No personal information about you will be linked to this survey. Please do not put your name or any other identifying information on the survey. The results of this survey will be used only for educational purposes and will not be published or released to the public. You must be 15 years old or older in order to complete this survey.
Directions: <these may vary but should include to only give one response per question>
4. Ask if there are any questions and then give the instructions to begin.
5. When participants have completed the survey, instruct them to fold it in half and place it in a large envelope that you will have on hand. Thank them for their participation.
If you have any questions regarding these procedures, contact your instructor.

B. Online Administration
Online administration of the survey to email addresses or social media can be done quickly and efficiently using Google Forms. As updates happen readily, please refer to the Google Learning Center on how to create a survey and collect the responses. Here is a current link to the help site:

Lab Project Survey compilation
Overview
This document is a supplement for the Lab Project Method Assignment. Once you’ve collected your data, you will want to use this document as a guide to segue from data collection (surveys) to data analysis (preparing it for SPSS).

Instructions
Once you’ve completed data collection, gather your surveys. It will be necessary to enter data from each individual surveyinto SPSS. Open a new data file in SPSS. You will create a file and enter all of the raw data from each survey. For instance, if you wanted to examine a relationship between Organizational Religiosity (OR) and Anxiety, your SPSS file would contain the following: you’d have ONE column for the OR variable since it was assessed using one question. The Anxiety subscale of DASS-21 contains 7 questions, so you’d need to enter responses from those seven questions into 7 columns (one per question). Everyone must include descriptive statistics on at least one demographic variable as well, so you will have at least one more column in SPSS (one per demographic included on your survey).
Make sure you follow the directions on how each variable should be scored / interpreted exactly as provided in the Lab Project Survey Development document. This information will be reiterated in your Method section. For instance, the Anxiety Subscale should be interpreted by summing all anxiety scores and then multiplying by 2 (as stated in the Lab Project Survey Development document). Thus, you would also need to create a Tot_Anxiety column in SPSS to reflect the sum multiplied by 2 (see Appendix B in the Kirkpatrick and Feeney textbook for guidance on how to compute a new variable). Your SPSS file would thus have at least 10 columns (one demographic; one for OR; eight related to anxiety). You’d only end up analyzing your OR and TOT_Anxiety variables/columns for Phase 3 Results and Discussion, but the instructor needs to see all of the data to ensure you are on the right track for this assignment. (Note if you wanted to examine the difference between low and high church attendance on anxiety, you’d have to create a second variable for OR in SPSS and categorize people into “high” and “low”, but this would have been operationally defined in your Phase 1).
Remember, each between-subjects variable is a column, and each row is a person’s data. Thus, you will have at least 20 rows of data, and a minimum of 3 columns (but may have many more, it depends on what variables you chose). Don’t forget to ensure your Scale of Measurement is correct in the Variable View!
The rest of this document continues the example research project examining the relationship between organizational religiousity and anxiety. The following pages show three “completed” surveys and how they’d look entered into SPSS (both Variable View and Data View are shown).

How to go from surveys to data entry in SPSS – Example
1. Now, to input this data into SPSS, I’ll start in the Variable View and enter names for all questions included on the survey. I’m naming them in a manner that will help me remember my variables – age, organizational religiousity, and anxiety. So, I’m naming my variables: Age, OrgRel, Anxiety1, Anxiety2, Anxiety3, Anxiety4, Anxiety5, Anxiety6, and Anxiety7 (note I will create an “AnxietyTOTAL” in a minute). Here’s what it looks like in Variable View:

2. Then, I go to Data View to enter data. Each survey will be one row, so I have three rows. Survey 1 is shown on row 1; survey 2 on row 2, and survey 3 on row 3. Once I enter all my surveys, I will create any “Totals” variables (as outlined in the Survey Development document). In my specific research example, the variable Depression is quantified using the subscale “depression” from the DASS-21. And, as it states, I need to sum all 7 questions and multiple it by two. I can do this by hand, in excel, or in SPSS. I’ll do it in SPSS by clicking on the “Transform” tab and “Compute Variable”. I can name this new variable whatever I want – “AnxietyTOTAL”. Keeping the function group “all”, I can scroll alphabetically to “Sum” and select it. I then add each relevant question (Anxiety1-Anxiety7), separated by commas. Now, I surround the entire formula thus far in parenthesis so I can tell it to take the sum and then multiply it by 2, by entered a star and 2 (star = multiply), as shown in the image below.

3. Once I select “OK”, then new variable is created. SPSS identified its scale of measurement as nominal, which is wrong (I double checked in the Variable View). So, I manually changed it back to “Scale” in the Variable View. The other variables did not need combined, so I am now ready to analyze my data (except I only have three people in my sample, so obviously that isn’t enough! J). You must have at least 20 people complete your survey, so you will have at least 20 rows of data. Here is what my example data looks like in Data View:

4. Don’t forget you will upload your SPSS data file AND a word document for this phase of the assignment!
