In this chapter we learn different topics and more information about those specific topics. Sex and Gender are not exactly the same thing, they in fact have different meaning when it comes to certain things for an example would be when you go to the doctors when filling out the papers they ask you for the sex and not the gender and thats because gender is defined more as what you condider yourself in other words as the behaviors, personal traits, and the social positions. Other things we will learn about in this chapter is gender identity and sexuality.

Gender Socialization is where it often occurs between four “major agents” and those major agents are family, peer group, mass media, and education. At a certain age young children should know there are certain distincts expectations on how they should act, going for boys and girls. As well in the early stages when their brain is developing they learn how to socialize with one another. In the chapter they had set an example of the “boys will be boys” and that is usually often used to justify their behaviors, an example would be when boys are fighting, shoving each other, pushing they will use the saying “boys will boys”. An observation I have is the society in this world, usually when young kids are being taught in school or in their family they are usually taught as “long hair is for girls” and “short hair is for boys” things like that is what they usually teach young kids as they grow up. Another example would be how females are supposed to dress a certain way like wearing dresses, skirts, dress in a femanine way, being polite, having manners.

Usually in the media like televisions/movies women tend to have less roles and when they do have roles they are often wives or mothers. In televisions women are most likely to be cooking, jewelry, hair salons, dishwashers, laundry etc advertising or promoting. Us women are usually underrepresented and i say that because men in general think us females are not capable of doing some of the things they are able to do, even thinking that us females should just be stay at home wolves when that shoulnt be like that, anyone is capable of doing things if they put their mind into it. An example Jean Kilbourne gave us was when people usually advertise aka women they are “perfect” and by that i mean pretty face, body, no pimples etc. “They spent every hour on cosmetics” obviously there is nothing wrong with wanting to look attractive but for women basically they have to have a whole transformation the way you look. It eventually gets to a point where women don’t look like human beings but look like a “mask” and that’s because there is so much cosmetics going on in their body/face.

Heteronormativity is a belief that heterosexuality predicated on the gender binary. In the chapter they give an example where many people usually assume the heterosexual orientation is biologically determined and unambiguous. LGBTQ are usually asked “when did you know you were gay” but in the heterosexual are rarely asked “when did you know that you were straight” the reason why they rarely ask the heterosexual that question is becasue it may come off in a rude way, as well you may never know how they may react to that question. An example i have observed is that i personally never ask if they are gay or not becasue like i said you may never know how they may react, or lets say i do know iu ask what they prefer out of respect i wouldnt want to come off rude to them or in any way. In the video “Two Spirits in Native American Culture” it had stated that the word “Berdache” means slave and kept boy which had made its way to the french and spanish to derogatorily describe a passive male homosexual.

Gender Identity and Sexual Orientation are not the same because gender identity is a socially constructed with american indian gender role fulfilling both symbolic interactions and structural functions in the aspects of culture, economics and the society. The American Indian Culture was never sought to eradicate, or punish two-spirits. The two spirits usually hold special places in the society, an example they provided in the video was a woman chief, a third gen. Woman and was a unique mix of female and male. She has masculine activities, and would hunt, riding, shooting etc and became the warrior of her people. She would lead the parties and other things as well, along with that she would support the wives with the wealth she had accumulated, in other words she would do both parts with no hesitation, she kept going and growing as a person not becasje of her sex or gender but because of her family social position.

In conclusion this chapter and videos have taught me more things than what i have known, In my opinion it is sad how back in the days you would have to be “perfect” in order to go and advertise or even to promote anything in general. In general we just realize how society is and how people are in the world, the change there has been in the past years to now.
