Nadine Burke Harris explains the major America threat to people’s health from childhood to adulthood. She reveals that the problem has been affecting the Americans in large numbers because it begins from childhood. She explains that the trauma is preventable. It is manageable if the necessary and recommended approaches would be adopted, implemented, and enforced for a healthy life. She points out that her experience in dealing with childhood experiences made her do more research to find out about the problem facing children presented to her for treatment. After her research, she realized that children are exposed to physical, emotional, and sexual abuse. Still, exposure to poverty, violence, divorce, and neglect are common and have significant effects on children’s health. One of them was a micro-social environment whereby parents have close contact and interaction with their children. From her speech, it is true that at this level, parents can easily monitor their children and take good care of them because children are very young. The next level is meso-social. This level is whereby children can extend their territories by interacting with other groups. They can do so by, for instance, playing. At this level, strict monitoring should be emphasized as the parent has no control over the child. It is easy for children to infect each other as they interact. Therefore, it is the parent’s responsibility to monitor the moves and behavior of the child so that their health is upheld. The other level of the environment, which affects childhood development under maltreatment is macro-social. At this level, a child is already grown up and can express themselves. In case of any abnormal feeling or body conditions, the child can report. Parents should also not refrain from being in touch with their children, even after they grow. That is because childhood trauma, among other problems that can affect children, such as neglect, can lead to future complications. Therefore, Nadine Burke Harris addressed each of the above levels of social environment well and in detail. However, she could have addressed one of the macro-social levels, by stating its benefits, challenges, and how to overcome the challenges for improved healthy life among the children facing maltreatment.
The concept of person-environment transactions is about the role of personality in the interactions beyond traditional conceptualizations, such as the ability to cope with stress regardless of the allegations that stress is hard to manage. Burke Harris presents an interrogative question on whether there is any hope for a child often falling sick to recover, especially those that suffer for a while. The crown wonders, but she confirms to them that there is hope. She explains that the environment in which they are would help in early detection. She insists that parents can prevent and even reverse the huge health concerns on their children by being careful and cautious to monitor their children’s behavior. They should also present their children for diagnoses in case of any defect. The sources of information and how Harris learned about childhood experiences and behaviors were not simple tasks. It cost her to search for materials from credible sources and analyze them. Still, she had to learn out of the experience through trial as the first time to deal with such complications. Generally, it was not a simple process compiling all information that was helpful to many parents to monitor and improve their children’s health. The lecture was clear. Every detail communicated was absorbed. For instance, one of the specific and central concepts I understood from the talk was heterogeneity. Heterogeneity refers to diverse elements. Various risk factors can cause childhood trauma or even future complications from the talk. Examples include neglect, sexual abuse, physical, and emotional abuse, among others. From this fact, it is important to note that different factors cause traumatic problems in children. The environment in which they grow up highly contributes to their health. I have also learned about probabilism, a specific and central concept from complex systems theory. Probabilism is a sufficient basis for action or belief. From the talk, the probability of Harris’ information being true is indeed high because she has done great research on the subject. She has studied it and has also experienced it through routine interaction with children infected with different diseases. From her utterance that she has helped many people recover and others improve on their health complications, there is a high probability of truth in her words. Still, from her findings, truth is probable concerning traumatic events that lead to lifetime complications.
This insight from complex systems theory has played a great role in my perception of issues that I could not imagine before. For instance, it has enhanced my sensitivity to diversity among children who experience maltreatment. It has made me think deeply about childhood experiences and the consequences of traumatic events. The events have tremendous effects on children and can affect them for life. Parents have a responsibility to protect their children from such events because they may cost their lives. It is very stressful to live with a person who has been affected or diagnosed with trauma. I have realized that there are different factors that cause childhood trauma and future complications.
