Question 1 (Do this one)
A symbol is an object, action, or event that represents something that creates a range of associations beyond itself. In literary works, a symbol can express an idea, clarify the meaning, or enlarge literal meaning.
Select a novel or play (Fences) and focusing on one symbol, write an essay analyzing how that symbol functions in the work and what it reveals about the characters or themes of the work as a whole. Do not merely summarize the plot.
Question 2 (Pick one)
● Several texts will feature a tragic hero in order to make an argument through that character’s arc. Pick a tragic hero in Fences, and establish how that tragic hero’s journey creates the meaning of the work as a whole.
● How do the generational differences in Fences create conflict and characterization that helps to establish the meaning of the work as a whole?
Question 3 (Do this one. You select the text)
Humor, such as satire or parody, can be used by an author to achieve change in many different social, political, or economic ways. Select a novel or a play and explain how the author uses humor to provide a cultural critique in his meaning of the work as a whole. __________________________________________________________________
This is graded on the AP rubric scale.
Break new ground, don’t tell me what happened in the play like we are in on-level 3rd grade. I want to be impressed with what the novel is arguing as a whole and how the generational differences or the symbol helps to create that meaning.
The more insightful and original (don’t just state the obvious) your argument the better you can do.
Connect all the logical dots for me like I am a stupid three-year-old. The analysis helps the argument.
