Why is theory relevant in social work practice? Choose a service user group and give examples

Learning outcomes
On successfully completing this module, students will be able to demonstrate module specific learning outcomes:
· Demonstrate an initial understanding of the range of theories and models
for social work intervention (1.1)
· Illustrate how historical and cultural contexts impact on the construction
of social work theories and methods (1.2)
· Demonstrate the application of theory to practice, and identify models
focusing on work with individuals and families in a range of practice settings (1.3)
· Demonstrate an understanding of the application of research, theory
and knowledge from sociology, social policy, psychology, health and
human growth and development (1.4)
· Understand the role of reflective practice and demonstrate basic skills
of reflection (1.5)
· Explain and illustrate how issues of power and anti-oppressive practice
are reflected in particular social work theories and methods (1.6)
· Be able to demonstrate their understanding of the purpose and contexts for
the involvement of the people who use services and carers in developing
social work services, social theory and social work training (1.7)
Generic Learning Outcomes:
· Demonstrate basic skills with regard to gathering, organizing, evaluating and synthesizing information in a clear and coherent manner (2.1)

Assessment criteria:-
The criteria for assessment arise from elements of the module learning outcomes. The essay title will in varying degrees allow you to:
o Demonstrate an understanding of the key concepts and approaches of social work theory and why it is relevant in social work practice.
o Identify how theory informs social workers in assessment and intervention.
o For the purposes of this assignment, ‘theory’ refers to an approach, model/method and overarching theory.
o Explore how issues of power and anti-oppressive practice are reflected in social work theory.
o Explore application of theory to practice
o Reflect on and evaluate the effectiveness of different theories.
The essay must be written in a formal academic style, with detailed references, correctly cited. A word count must be included. We will go over the requirements of the essay in the session on the 30th March in the face to face teaching session. Additionally LF will be offering a session 12.30-1.30pm on ‘Theory to Practice’ on the 24th February 2021. You will be sent an invite to this session in due course.
