This assignment is a three-page essay based on one of the literary works from the section entitled “The Ancient Mediterranean and Near Eastern Literature.”
I am interested in your response to the following assertion:
“Although Americans are separated from ancient people by history and culture, human beings today are not vastly different from human beings who lived thousands of years ago.”
Use a character or theme in an ancient work to examine this claim. You may support the argument, or you may challenge the idea. Whatever your position, your essay needs to demonstrate that you understand an important element of this literary work. You may use ideas presented in class, but I am interested in reading your own thoughts and perspectives about the literature. This essay provides a chance to demonstrate your creative thinking as you develop your own argument based on reading and discussion. Your essay shouldn’t simply describe something that you’ve read. Rather, show a good understanding of something that you’ve read and connect this understanding to your own ideas. I’m also interested in how well you organize your piece of writing. Begin with a good introduction that makes your main point. Develop the discussion in the body of the essay, and complete the essay with a strong conclusion that does not simply restate your introduction.
Assume that the reader is familiar with the story and the characters, but provide enough background information to set up your argument. Do not summarize long passages in the book. This paper should not use any reference citations, so avoid reading outside sources that analyze the literary work. Instead, demonstrate your own ideas that show how you are thinking about an interesting point in a story or an interesting character. Develop the essay with supporting details and a strong argument.
