McGinn’s (2020) the article is about the challenges facing families in Canada as school heads back in September, at a time of COVID-19. McGinn discusses how families’ decisions are about not just the children’s safety but also that of their grandparents. He reports that some families have decided to not send their children to school, instead prioritizing the ongoing relationship between the children and grandparents, while other families have decided to send their children to school with the realization that the children and grandparents will not see each other for months, in order to keep the grandparents safer from COVID.

While Canada is not typically regarded as a collectivist society, this article highlights that during this pandemic, families are prioritizing and making decisions based on familial relationships, and not just the students or individual households. Equally, it highlights the pull of the sandwich generation, making decisions and “balancing caring for aging parents while caring for children” (Anzovino, et al. 2019, 287).

Demographic changes evident in this article relate Canada’s large aging population and multigenerational relationships. Most significantly a large aging population, now “associate aging with positive things, like spending more time with loved ones” (Anzovino, et al. 2019, 268); McGinn quotes Robert Madan saying, “the older adult population wants to continue to be active and see family” during this time of COVID-19, and this influences the decisions that families (or more particularly, parents of the sandwich generation [Anzovino, et al. 2019, 287]) are making with respect to their children and parents. Secondly, decades ago multigenerational relationships were harder to come by as people’s life expectancy was shorter, and the quality of life of aging adults was not as good as it is today (Connolly 2017), and thus preserving that quality of life may not have been as valued as it is for today’s grandparents and sandwich generation.

A the sociological approach is appropriate for this subject as it focuses on the pull between two primary “agents of socialization” (Anzovino, et al. 2019, 281): school and family. Parents are making challenging decisions in regards to how their children will be socialized for the year, often feeling like they have to choose between (extended) family and school, rather than being able to mix the two as they normally would be able to do with ease.

I chose this article because I feel the article is really relevant to what many families in Canada are experiencing right now (including my own), balancing the challenging choices that provincial and territorial governments have provided, for families to choose between the health of their children, their children’s education, and their family relationships and health.
