Pride & Prejudice

Choose one of the following topics to write about. Your paper must be a minimum of 2 FULL pages in length. MLA formatting. You must include at least two sources and quotations (you can use the novel for one). This means you must have a works cited page! Use formal voice (no “I,” “me,” or “us”). For example, do not start your paper by saying “I’m going to be talking about marriage in Pride and Prejudice…”–instead, you could start by saying something along the lines of “In Jane Austen’s novel Pride and Prejudice, the author criticizes the importance of marriage and the role of women in English society through Elizabeth’s many failed proposals.”

Pride and Prejudice: Discuss how the title of the novel ties in with the vices of one or two characters. What is Austen’s ultimate message about these characteristics?

Topic:

Man vs. Society: Choose a character from Pride and Prejudice and write an essay in which you:

a) briefly describe the standards of the fictional society in which the character exists

b) show how the character is affected by and responds to those standards. Do not merely summarize the plot and make sure to incorporate thematic purpose in the essay.
