Read the Attached Document: Social Construction of Social Problems.pdf Post your Response to this Discussion Prompt, with your Social Issue/Problem in the Title of your Thread, between Mon-Wed. Starting Thursday, reply to two classmates’ threads. Add your own thoughts about how to construct their chosen issue – in other words, add to their list. Adding specific examples and details is encouraged.
Review Discussion Board Guidelines pinned at the top of the Discussions page before posting. All posts must contain cited information (quote, statistic, term, etc. with citation) and must be 8 sentences minimum. Responses to the Prompt need to be posted Mon-Wed; two replies to classmates need to be posted Thurs-Sun.
Choose a social problem/social issue; if someone else has already chosen the issue you are thinking of, choose another. If you need ideas for social issues, refer to the textbook. Using the list below, write with each level of explanation the factors you think would be important in constructing social explanations of the issue (I’ve used unemployment as the example).
Individual: attitudes or capabilities of unemployed individuals; are they seeking work? do they have the technical and social skills employers want?
Familial: Has their upbringing prepared them for the world of work and obtaining work?
Locality: are there possibilities or problems in the local pattern or employment? Has the educational system prepared them for employment? Do their peers encourage or discourage employment?
Cultural: Does society stress the benefits of being employed? Are there cultural factors that encourage employment?
Societal: Whose interests are served by unemployment? Does unemployment make labor cheaper and benefit employers? Do social factors and social programs encourage employment?
