Part 1: Read the short poem “70” by Catullus (659) carefully and slowly, allowing each word to soak into not only your mind, perhaps your emotions. You are encouraged to define “Jupiter” and how it relates to the other ideas. Writing Topic: Make an argument about this short poem: What do you think is the speaker’s / persona’s purpose for writing this short poem? Is the tone humorous, dark, or both” Why? Why not? What words and phrases stand out for you? You must quote and cite the line(s) within your discussion. Who is “Jupiter” (line 1)? Why “Jupiter” versus Mars?
Part 2: Poetry Discussion. Your Choice. Read several poems. Then, choose ONE poem for this writing from the textbook, except “The Fish” and “Dog’s Death.” Place the author’s name and page number, for example, Yusef Komunyakaa’s “Facing It” (910). This way, we can locate and read the poem, relate and connect the poem to your ideas.
Write a stanza-by-stanza analysis of the poem that you choose. What do you think, feel is happening with the speaker/persona in the poem? Cite the line number of the poem. Try to separate the author from the speaker. They may not be the same person or speaker.
Part 3: Write a love or may not a love poem, and afterward reflect on your poetic choices. Allow your language to intrigue readers imagination. What kinds of imagery, language, and figures of speech (pages 12-17) did you choose? Do you think they (figures of speech, imagery, language) are generally good choices for this kind of poem? If so, what makes them so? If not, why not? What did you enjoy most about this Discussion? Be sure to answer each question and add your personal connection. Enjoy this assignment!
