Papers should be no less than 4 pages in length, no more than 6. Your papers should be well cited and refer to at least 3 concepts. Summarize and explain the relevant theoretical concepts and their meaning as they relate to your argument and/or analysis. I will be looking for a clear argument, familiarity with relevant material, and a robust analysis (application of concept to a specific example; employing sociological concepts and theories to answer ‘why’?) 1) Theodor Geisel might be the world’s best known and most read social theorists. He is read to children, by the elderly, and given as a college graduation gift. Dr. Suess, as he is better known, is also one of the most subversive authors in American history. And here’s your chance to discover why. I want you to read Yertle The Turtle by Dr. Suess and provide a Marxist review and analysis of the text. Having spent the past weeks talking about commodities, power, the class system, the social relations of capitalism, etc., I want you to take these concepts and try to identify them in the Suess story. What is Seuss really getting at that Marx would recognize? How would Marx talk about the story? What does Yertle represent? Is Yertle a Marxist parable? Here is a link to the text of Yertle for your convenience: http://www.spunk.org/texts/prose/sp000212.txt To quote Charles Lemert: “One of the reasons social theorists are willing to tolerate confusion is that their calling is to stay put in the dirty work of daily life while trying to figure out social things. (Lemert, 2007.) This is your chance to get your hands a little dirty. Engage with Marx and the course material. Turn this into a conversation with both the theorist and with me. Now that you’ve been thinking about Marx (and, to a lesser extent Mills, Giroux and others), how would you make sense ‘Yertle’? How would Marx?
