CONCEPTS IN BIOLOGY (BIO 132) RESEARCH PAPER AND ORAL PRESENTATION GUIDELINES
Research Paper –
Deadline – The paper is due Tuesday, December 1, NO EXCEPTIONS! Papers will be submitted to Safe Assign on Blackboard and submitted as a stapled paper copy in the beginning of class. Paper copies will not be accepted via e-mail. Directions on uploading your paper to Safe Assign are attached.
Along with the submission of your paper, you must submit five multiple choice or true/false questions with the correct answers to Professor Kilhaney on Tuesday, December 1. These questions will be used to create quizzes you will take during presentations and are worth five points of your total research paper grade.
Presentation of Paper – The paper should have a title page that includes the title of the topic, student’s name, Concepts in Biology and date of submission. The paper should include a well-developed introduction discussing your thesis in broad terms and then eventually lead to your actual thesis statement. Body paragraphs should include background information and examples that support your thesis. Each example should be developed into its own paragraph. Body paragraphs should include parenthetical citations (i.e. author’s last name, page #) and each paragraph should cover one topic. Ideas should be organized and developed clearly. Lastly, the paper should end with a well-developed conclusion that sums up your arguments that proves your thesis.
The paper must be neatly organized and stapled together upon submission. The final paper should utilize appropriate style and it should be clear, concise and easy to follow and written in a logical manner in paragraphs. There will be no roman numerals or section divisions. Also, tables, graphs, pictures and figures can be used to support your ideas or thesis but are not necessary and should not be excessive and must be correctly cited in MLA style. Information should be presented in your own words and writing should be correct in diction, style, grammar and spelling. As this is a scientific paper, avoid the use of personal pronouns (i.e. I, we, me, etc.) and personal content. Please adequately define and use scientific terms correctly. Do not use something you do not understand.
As a reminder, plagiarism is a serious offense and is totally unacceptable in all courses. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary (2013), plagiarism is defined as “to steal and pass off (the ideas or words of another) as one’s own or to use (another’s production) without crediting the source.” Plagiarism can occur in a variety of forms, such as “turning in someone else’s work as your own, copying words or ideas from someone else without giving credit, failing to put a quotation in quotation marks, giving incorrect information about the source of a quotation, changing words but copying the sentence structure of a source without giving credit and copying so many words or ideas from a source that it makes up the majority of your work whether you give credit or not” (www.plagiarism.org). Therefore, all written work must be unique and original and this applies to laboratory assignments as well as the research paper. However, if you must copy something directly, or paraphrase a written text, it must be cited correctly. Therefore, if anyone has questions in regards to the definition of plagiarism or correctly citing, please contact me as soon as possible since plagiarism of assignments or the research paper will result in an “F” for the assignment or research paper and you will be reported to the Chairperson of Biology and Chemistry, the Dean of Natural Health and Sciences and the Dean of Student Development.
If you turn in a paper written for another course or one previously written for this course, you will receive an automatic ZERO
Works Cited – The works cited should contain a minimum of six sources from a variety of media (i.e. books, journals, magazines and electronic sources, no Wikipedia or .com websites!). The citations in the works cited and in-text citations must follow MLA format. Check the library website for the handbook examples.
