Please adhere to the academic honesty guidelines included in the syllabus. If you have any questions, contact me well before the due date.
You will craft a better paper by supporting your analysis with well-chosen and specific examples, and writing in a grammatical, clear, economical, and organized way. Use the handout, How to Write an Effective History Paper, for guidance.
This paper is worth 20% of your semester grade.

Due Date. Friday, 30 Oct. by 5:00 PM to Blackboard. Unless you make prior arrangements with your section leader, your paper will lose a full letter grade for each day it is late. Please save your file in this format: lastname_Assignment_3.doc.
Assignment Description. The overall goal of this assignment is to research a major event, trend, or process in U.S. history. You may choose one of three broad topics: racial segregation, the Great Depression, or World War II.
Create a summary and outline. Use your textbook (Give Me Liberty!) to summarize and outline the history of your broad topic. Your summary and outline should be a page in length. Please specify the pages of the textbook you are summarizing and outlining. This outline will serve as the basis for your following 5-7 page essay.
Research and write a 5-7 page essay on your topic. Use the list of websites given below. Be sure to provide a bibliography or works cited page showing the websites you used. Use at least two websites and at least five specific primary sources to craft your essay.
Create a reverse outline of your essay. On the last page of your assignment, create a reverse outline. This consists of the following:
Write a paragraph describing the argument of your essay, the sources used, and the conclusion(s) reached.
Below this paragraph, write down the topic of each paragraph of your essay and a short description of how that paragraph’s topic advances or supports the overall argument of your essay. Try to use as few words as possible. This should tell you whether each paragraph has a clear focus and whether your paragraphs are connected logically to each other.
