Introduction: The argumentative analysis essay is an expository paper in which you will utilize logic and reason to show that one idea is more legitimate than another idea. It attempts to persuade a reader to adopt a certain point of view or to take a particular action in a clear and concise manner.
Purpose: In completing the reading and writing assignments thus far, you have been building towards writing an essay in which you support a claim (thesis), wherein your argument throughout the essay will respond to the specific questions below while also analyzing the literary elements of the novel. You will write to construct meaning as critical thinkers and responsible citizens (Course Learning Outcome).
This assignment will develop the skill of arguing a point and supporting it (in writing) using extensive evidence from outside sources. You will evaluate the implied argument of the assigned text and its rhetorical strategies for effectiveness and detect any logical fallacies. (Student Learning Outcome).
Task: You will write an essay using textual support (quotes) and analysis to form an argument supporting your claim in response to the following prompt:
Analyzing Literary Elements and Rhetorical Intent of the novel: issues, form (novel),style (figurative language, tone, dialogue, voice), main themes, the relationship between form and content, the relationship between the main plot and the subplot, and characters’ strengths and flaws.
Critical Thinking Questions: You will need to take a closer look at the relationships between the community and the land in contrast to the view of society at large of land as a commodity to be taken for “the greater good” (eminent domain). What are the consequences or outcomes of social injustice that Viramontes highlights in this novel? How does she demonstrate social injustice, displacement, and dehumanization through her characters? How does Viramontes connect the past to the present? How does this novel remain relevant to issues of today?
Essay Guidelines & Requirements
Your essay must contain: an introduction (hook, background info, text summary, thesis), fully-developed and focused body paragraphs (topic sentence, one idea per body paragraph, quotes, analysis), and a conclusion (that restates overall argument, answers “so what, why is this important?”).
Required Word Count: 1000-1250 words. Essay should be no fewer than FOUR full pages of writing. (Max 6 pages)
MLA formatting: 12-point, Times New Roman font only. 1 inch margins, double-spaced.
Relevant quotes in each body paragraph. Don’t include quotes just to fulfill the requirement.
You must use MLA in-text citations (Viramontes 28) and write a Work Cited entry for this essay (Student Learning Outcome)
Pay attention to tone, and avoid contractions, casual language, slang, and generalizations.
Your evidence (examples, quotes) must come from the text. You will not use personal experience to support your examples for analytical or anecdotal purposes.
Plagiarism will result in a “0” grade for this essay. Any paper that does not meet at least the minimum requirements will not receive a passing grade.
Although you are supporting your claims and ideas, do not write, “In my opinion,” “I believe that,” “I think that.” Consider how you could rephrase your claims to make direct, declarative, confident statements and assertions. Do not use 1st or 2nd person pronouns in your essay
