Article/review on Bach: Musical Offering In C Minor, BWV 1079

Who is your audience? It’s very likely to someone like you. How can you write an article that inspires YOU to read? How can you make Bach and Hildegard von Bingen relevant?

Your piece should include the following:

An introduction that catches the reader’s attention and imagination… describing a scene vividly in detail. Be creative. Maybe you were there when Bach played for Friederick… maybe you were at the premiere of Ordo Virtutum. It could be anachronistic. Why not?
Your thesis statement.
An overview of the whole piece. Both pieces are huge. Von Bingen’s is a drama. Please consider giving your reader a summary of the plot. Bach’s is a collection of works about a theme. How are these works organize? By church modes? By key? By several voices on the fugues? Use your research.
The piece’s historical importance.
How does it portrait the composer’s ability to write?
How is it different from their contemporaries?
Your editor wants you to zoom in and describe this part of the work in detail – remember, your audience may not know the terminology.

How do the melodic lines move? How are they related to the text? Are they dependant or interdependent? How does tone color shift throughout the work? Are there moments that they louder than the others? Make sure you mention the right instruments and playing techniques. (Don’t say bow when there is plucking, for example). Refer to your handouts to cover all grounds. There are many reviews of these works. Find them in Clio and take notes from them. Specificity is key. You are describing music moving through time. Phrases like “This work overall is polyphonic” are vague and highly inaccurate. Music evolves and grows textures, melodies, tone color, and rhythms are not static.
