Assignment 2

Overview
This week’s essay assignment asks you to take a first step in our broad case study on reporting for infectious diseases, based on current events.

As a goal, we would like to be able to define how we should enable messaging from the new automated testing done in commercial labs. These labs have never done infectious disease testing, so there has never before been a need to report infectious disease incidence to the CDC.

Now, there’s a new requirement do to so, and this provides us with a case study to follow the message design process from problem to enabling messaging. This will allow us to practice some of the skills from earlier in the term, as well as apply what we’re learning about technology and messaging to this problem space.

In order to address this problem space, we first need to do some research to be sure we understand the problem. Thus, this week’s essay assignment is a research assignment.

There are a number of areas we should probably know more about as we begin to look at this problem space. In the Week 3 online session, we did some brainstorming, and came up with three general areas we would like to understand more about:

How does the science of the test work?
How does the current manual process of testing work, from prescription to result?
How does large-scale automated testing work? How does this change the work process of testing?
How does reporting to the CDC work? What are the policies? Who is responsible for reporting? How does the CDC aggregate results?
There may be other areas of information that we have not identified above. Feel free to explore, so long as you keep to the FACTS of the PROCESS of testing and reports. Please stay away from the POLITICS in the news and in social media.
