ASSIGNMENT: Discussion/Conclusion Round Table
1 1 unread reply. 1 1 reply.
READ FIRST: Discussing Your Findings (APA) (Links to an external site.)
Now that our data has been analyzed and our methods assembled so that others could replicate our study, it is time to begin thinking about the Discussion/Conclusion section. This is the final “big” thing in a scholarly article. At this point, it is likely you are very familiar with this section – as it is usually the juiciest bit of a research article where the researchers spend some time talking about the research in terms anyone can understand. While it is traditionally called the Discussion section, it is also the conclusion to your research paper.
The discussion section…
Includes an opening paragraph that typically summarizes the studies research question, methods, and how well the results supported the hypotheses
Discussed the studies importance
Often takes a critical look at the limitations of the study and suggests directions for future research
May pose alternative explanations for the data and pose questions raised by the research
Much like the scholarly articles you’ve been reading, you will include a Discussion/Conclusion to your paper as well. But first, it’s time to have a “Discussion/Conclusion” round table (it’s a very big table) like you would in a traditional research lab.
This assignment is Pass/Fall and worth 50 points. To pass, you must complete the following:
1. Respond to the following prompt:
What was one limitation of your research study?
In the Discussion section, researchers talk about issues/concerns with study design that may affect the reliability and validity of their claim, so it is important to think critically about what we created as a class. I want you to come up with ONE limitation.
Review the material on association claims, paying particular attention to the sections about…
Designing SurveysPreview the document
Assessing the Validity of Association ClaimsPreview the document
These notes about Psychological MeasurementsPreview the document may also help.
Think about our study design! Be critical!
How might a research study be designed to overcome (or limit the effects) of this limitation?
Think about appropriate design, the limitations of correlational vs. experimental research design, and what you’ve learned about how to prevent issues with validity.
2. Respond thoughtfully to ONE of your classmates’ responses.
This isn’t my first rodeo, any iteration on “I think you make a really good point here” or “I like that you said ________, I agree with that” is not a thoughtful response and we both know it.
You can instead…
Suggest other tweaks to study design that may help mitigate their limitation
Sometimes, limitations have multiple consequences, what is another consequence of their limitation?
Offer other suggestions or ideas
Remember, it’s pass/fail. So, you have to do both for credit. You cannot see your classmates’ responses until you post your own, but after you do – be sure to read through all of your classmates’ responses so that you can get ideas for your discussion section!
