I. Journal: For each class, you will write a 3-page brief reflection. The Journal will be double-spaced in 12pt Times New Roman font with standard margins and each entry will be a form of rhetorical criticism. Each entry will have a title and will be one running Word document. You are reading autobiographical works, speeches, scholarly assessments, and watching films. Your journal entries should reflect these multiple forms.

Things you should consider in your journal entries about speeches and autobiographical works: How does the speaker make their arguments? How do those arguments relate to the occasion? How does the speaker evidence their arguments? What kind of relationship does the speaker try to establish with the immediate audience? With the mediated audience? With a hostile audience? How does the speaker conceptualize power? What kinds of arguments does the speaker make about power? Does the speaker use particular forms of speech to make their arguments like: metaphor, analogy, narrative, invective? What is the tone of the speech and how does that work for or against the speaker?

Things to consider for films: What kind of intervention does the film make into civil rights or Black Power history? What kinds of details does it offer to help us understand histories that have no been shared so prominently?

Things to consider for scholarly assessments: What are the authors arguments? What kinds of sources do they use? How do they make their case? Is it compelling? Why or why not? What resonates and what doesn’t? What surprised you or delighted you? Were there any a-ha! moments?

Conclude all of your entries with what you think and how you feel about the arguments reading them TODAY. Offer evaluation of the readings and films. Are they compelling? Why or why not. Are they innovative? Why or why not. Did they move you? Why or why not?
