A critical (or analytical) essay presents a clear central argument while discussing/analyzing the arguments presented in other articles and texts related to a particular topic, question, or argument.
Do not write an essay that only describes a topic. Present an argument that tells the reader why the topic you have chosen to write about matters to you, and clearly state your position on a controversial or contested discourse.
The topic you choose to write about should be clearly defined: not too broad or vague, and not overly narrow or obscure. Develop a clear thesis statement and support your position through the use of clear and specific examples that support your main point(s).
A good critical essay topic will include an acknowledgement of global consequences to a particular position. Be aware of any potential social justice concerns, bias or discrimination against a particular group, and note any exclusions or appropriation of others.
Choose a topic that interests you. Please consider one of the following topics:
1. Politics of Food
2. Immigration Policy/Reform
3. Constructions of Race, Class, Gender
4. Critiques of Capitalism (Western Civilization/Exploitation of Labor and Natural Resources)
The Critical Essay/Class Discussion Topics must focus on a particular concern related to one of the above topics discussed in class and should include a clear and precise thesis that narrows the scope of the essay. Avoid generalization and broad categories of inquiry. Review specific articles discussed to help generate a clear focus and tentative introduction/thesis statement. Consider debates related to your field of study and/or professional experience. Find connections between the topics listed above and important research/discourse in your academic discipline.
Requirements: The Critical Essay must include 4-5 pages AND a Works Cited page. 1. Select two articles from class discussion.
2. In your essay:
1. Write a clear introduction that defines the scope of your topic.
2. Develop a clear thesis/argument.
3. Fully develop your own ideas, and write a preliminary draft.
