In a thesis-driven essay, respond to ONE of the following questions:
In Labute’s The Shape of Things, Evelyn seduces Adam and convinces him to alter his appearance and change his behavior. Evelyn also documents intimate aspects of their relationship and puts them on display during her presentation at the end of the play. To what extent is Adam a victim? To what extent is Adam responsible for his actions?
OR
In Labute’s The Shape of Things, Evelyn is a radical artist who makes “a human sculpture” (Adam) to critique society’s shallow and superficial values (“the obsession with the surface of things”). To what extent is Evelyn’s “work of art” justified?
Essay Checklist:
