Assessment: Essays are assessed using the “Critical Paper” Rubric provided in Course Resources. In general, each prompt asks you to write an original literary argument about one of the stories we have read, demonstrating how a particular literary element functions in the short story. An argument consists of both the claim you are making about the text(s) and the reasons you believe this claim is true. In literary arguments, the reasons for any claim should be specific textual evidence from the literary work, along with analysis of this evidence (an explanation of how/why you think this evidence proves your claim).
When you write your response, make sure that you:
Include a clear CLAIM that answers the question posed (what are you trying to prove?);
Quote specific EVIDENCE from the literary text(s) to support the claim; and
Include specific ANALYSIS (or explanation) of this evidence in your own words. The analysis ensures that we understand why the evidence you’ve quoted proves the claim you’ve made.
Additionally, your response must be grammatically correct and adhere to etiquette guidelines. Please make sure you proof-read before posting.
Format: Papers should be roughly 400-500 words (or no more than two pages, no less than a page and half, double-spaced). Papers should be in Arial 11 point font or Times New Roman 12 point with no extra space between paragraphs. (Watch this as Microsoft Word tends to add space automatically unless you correct.)
Remember: This is not a research paper. No outside sources need to be used. You argument should originate from your reading and thinking about the course texts. All quotes and paraphrasing should be from the short story being analyzed or from the Roberts text. That being said, if you choose to consult additional sources, any source that has influenced your thinking or your writing must be properly acknowledged and cited.
