The authors in this article evaluated how African Americans’ mental health were affected by racism. The participants were recruited from New York City and the date span was between 2011 to 2013. The authors used multivariate linear regression. This method was used to evaluate the experience of racism and the mental health of African Americans over time in this cross-sectional study. The article does not clearly state the design and purpose and there was no theory mentioned or research questions listed (Kwate & Goodman, 2015).

If there were any changes that I would want to make I would consider that in some research designs, a few long steps can be performed simultaneously such as data collection and analysis According to Burian, Rogerson, and Maffei (2010), research design determines the “selection of the data collection tools, processes, and procedures used for data analysis” which are then aligned accordingly. Due to the research problem and purpose stated in this article, focusing on a mixed-method approach and alignment of the quantitative and qualitative approaches might help in achieving critically increased validity and getting solid research effort.

According to Burian et al (2010), there was a remark that the quantitative approach focuses on “universal laws and govern cause and effect of what can be seen and observed by manipulating variables.” While on the other hand, the qualitative approach allows researchers to understand, explore, and discover new methodologies. Nonetheless, all strategies ought to exemplify the outcomes from both procedures by synchronizing findings to align it with the hypotheses.
