IPv4 and IPv6 Comparison

Purpose

Network Address Translation (NAT) is the technology that has kept IPv4 around for so many years. This technology also allows you to have multiple devices at your house or work, with only one public IP address. NAT has also helped out with some security issues that you seemingly read on a daily basis. However, it is not the cure all for these issues. Having a comprehensive grasp of the security issues associated with technology is a good step in ensuring your network is secure.

Part 1:

Create a 2-page paper on the following topics:

Explain how NAT has extended the life of the IPv4 addressing scheme.
One of the backbone techniques of network security is blocking all ports except those absolutely needed to conduct business. Discuss some of the most common TCP/IP ports that should be blocked to reduce the threat of a breach.
6to4 is an IPv4-to-IPv6 transition technology that allows IPv6 packets to be sent across IPv4 network infrastructures without explicitly configuring IPv6-over-IPv4 tunnels. How does 6to4 compare to Teredo?

Part 2

1. In a half-page essay, explain the various methods that allow IPv4 and IPv6 networks to interact, including dual stack and tunneling through the IPv4 cloud. Explain hybrid IPv4/IPv6 network and node types, such as basic hybrid, nested hybrid, and true hybrid.

2. In a half-page essay, describe the various IPv4/IPv6 transition mechanisms, such as dual stacks and IPv6-over-IPv4 tunneling.

3. In a half-page essay, outline the following three tunneling mechanisms: The ISATAP tunneling mechanism, including its components, addressing, routing and router configuration; the 6to4 tunneling mechanism, including its components, addressing, routing, and communication procedures; and the Teredo tunneling system, including its components, addressing, routing, and processes.

4. In a half-page essay, formulate an innovative solution for an IPv6 deployment plan. Include a list of all the activities you need to do to accomplish your initiative. These activities should include an inventory of existing computers and network infrastructure, an inventory of current applications, the need to acquire IPv6 addresses, etc.
