Discussion #1: Introductions
This is the first of 8 required weekly online discussions. Each is worth 50 points toward your final grade.
A discussion will open each week just after midnight on a Monday, and will be due on Friday at 11:59 p.m.
You must notify the instructor about any technical difficulties no later than each Friday at 5:00 p.m. in order to receive assistance. Last-minute technical problems will NOT result in an extension.
Yes, technical problems can and do occur! You are responsible for submitting posts before the deadline and making sure that they posted as planned. Throughout the quarter, be sure that all your posts and replies successfully appear in the discussion thread. I recommend making a copy of your writing, before submitting it, just in case you need to post a second time.
When they close at the end of the week, these discussions should look like actual discussions, not polls or surveys. You should not only read the question and answer it, but also read and consider your classmates’ responses.
To earn full credit for each discussion, you must create one original post AND reply to at least 3 of your classmates’ posts.
Here’s the topic for this week’s discussion:
You’ve undoubtedly been asked to introduce yourself many times in the past. But this isn’t your typical introduction. As you consider the question “Who are you?” Think about the fundamental ways that you choose to define yourself. Do you define yourself primarily by a temporarily role (such as “student”)? By your relational roles (“brother,” “mother,” etc.)? By the your birth country or region? By your job title? Your religious affiliation? Your age? Your hobbies? Your personality? Your physical features? Really reflect on why you might choose to introduce yourself the way you do.
As you answer this week’s question, “Who are you?” your response should include not only your introduction, but a personal reflection on why you chose to highlight (and omit) certain parts of your identity in your introduction.

1 Who am I?
To answer this question, I will start with my name. Hi, my name is Jennifer Chou. I am a full time student at Foothill College whom is trying to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in Registered Nursing. In the recent Winter Quarter that passed, I had traveled from Sacramento to Los Altos, twice a week. I think this had shown my dedication to the educational goal of being a Registered Nurse one day. I am a sister to five other siblings. My job is on hold due to the COVID-19 situation. I work in the healthcare industry. My hobbies include reading, riding my bicycle around town (before the COVID-19), cooking, gardening, and photography.
I
chose to highlight the major parts of introducing myself formally in class. I chose to omit the answers to the other questions because it was not truly necessary in this scenario. I believe those questions should be answered in a different scenario. I felt that the other qualities do not truly define who I am.

Hello everyone! My name is Melanie and this quarter will be wrapping up my second and final year at Foothill. In the fall I will be attending San Jose State pursuing a BA in Psychology, which hopefully will lead to a MA in Occupational Therapy. While balancing school full-time I also have a part-time job as a hostess at a restaurant. Unfortunately, due to the current state of the pandemic, my job is put on pause. When I am not on lockdown, my hobbies include eating sushi, hanging out with my friends, and going to the beach. During the time of quarantine I keep myself busy doing puzzles and binging TV shows that I’ve already seen!
To reflect on my introduction, the aspects of my life I chose to focus on mostly included my temporary role as a student and my hobbies. I picked these two ways to define myself, because I hold my role as a student and my favorite activities close to my identity. Student life has been with me for over seventeen years, and I take pride in my hard work as a college student. In addition to educational status, I believe my hobbies reveal a great deal about me and my interests. For an introduction to the class, I wanted to keep it short and sweet.
Some aspects I chose to omit include, being the youngest of three girls, my physical features, and my religious background. While these areas of my life are still important to me, they don’t play as big of a role in my identity. I believe they play a smaller role as they are aspects of my life that I didn’t choose.

Hello everyone,
My name is Darius and I am an academic sophomore at Foothill and am set to transfer to to SJSU in the Fall. When asked to introduce myself I always only think to provide my name and my position in whatever field that fits the context of the discussion, such as in a classroom-type setting like this one. However, I am aware that I could take the definition of myself much further and when not restricted by any context, I would then define myself as a 22-year old psychology major, rugby player, and recently-developed Naruto fanatic.
In a cultural context, I would add that I grew up in the bay area, in an interracial family with both parents for awhile and a little sister. This gives a little more cultural background by providing location, family, and obvious mix of differing racial cultures. To other people, I further recognize that I am also a son, brother, cousin, friend, teammate, coworker, and peer. I never introduce myself based on my physical features because people can typically see me for themselves, and the same goes for my personality as that can be judged by whoever my company is, for themselves. I choose to introduce myself based on things that may not be clear to my audience so they can begin to develop an accurate judgement/ identity of me.
