Leadership is a very interesting topic, and one that should not be taken lightly. Above all else, leadership has to be ethical otherwise everything it touches will be at risk of failure. When discussing leadership, it is important to note that managers who are leaders are totally dependent on the trust, commitment, and effort of others within the firm. The textbook talks about how disconnects between a leader and a follower can cause a lack of commitment on the follower’s part (Ferrell, Fraedrich, & Ferrell, 2017, p. 329). Without the trust and commitment of those below them managers will have no power to lead as they need to. It boils down to the core idea that an unethical leadership that does not have the trust and commitment of those below them is not a leader because nobody is following them. It is not about the position but rather the relationships that define a manger who is a leader. If those below the manager do not put in effort because they are not treated right and motivated by their manager, then the manager will not receive the results they need no matter how smart of a manager they may be. One study looked into ethical stewardship to look at the implications it has on leadership and trust and found that honor and trustworthiness are at the core of what ethical stewardship is (Caldwell, Hayes, Bernal, & Karri, 2008, para. 1). A manager is dependent on the trust, effort, and commitment of those within the firm because they are truly the ones doing the work on the day to day basis and the manager’s task is to motivate and give them the tools they need to succeed. The Bible is very clear on the subject of unethical people, “A false balance is an abomination to the Lord, but a just weight is his delight” (English Standard Version, 2001, Proverbs 11:1). Clearly the Lord does not tolerate unethical managers but rather delights in ethical practices. Part of being ethical means understanding that those in the firm under the manager are who really do the hard work and the manager is there not as a taskmaster but rather as a supporter for them.
