Discussion question

TOPIC
Your assignment is to EITHER answer one of the below assignment questions, or pose a similar, informed, question regarding the lab experiments to the class. Your post must be at least 50 words, and use proper punctuation and grammar. You should read through the assigned lab material before you make your post, so that your post will be informed, and not posing a question that was answered in the lab handout. Your grade will be determined by your overall involvement in the forum and your demonstration of three areas of communication: application, critical thinking, and writing.

ASSIGNMENT QUESTIONS
Pictured is a data table from a student who performed the same germination experiment last year (she let hers go for 7 days, rather than 5). These data are the length of the hypocotyl of germinated seeds from the 5 light treatments. (n/a means not available because not enough seedlings germinated in that treatment.)

Student data for germination study

1) Could we analyze these data with a statistical test? If so, what conclusion would we draw? Pick a test, do the analysis, and post the results.

2) What would the null and alternative hypotheses be for an analysis of the above data?

3) If there are significant differences in the above data set, what do you think is the biological reason for these differences in growth of lettuce seedlings?

Read through the instructions for the gravitropism experiments, and consider the following:

4) What is your hypothesis and prediction for the treatments?

5) What is the biological explanation for your hypothesis and predictions?

6) Are they any things about the experimental procedure that were / seem problematic for you? If so, how could the design be improved?

7) Does the gravitropism experiment have a sufficient control? If so, which treatment acts as a control?

8) Next week (week 5), you will begin work on Peerceptiv Assignment 3, which is a results and discussion for the lettuce germination experiments. What is the purpose of a results and discussion? (Be sure to review your Writing in Biology Handbook for this.)

9) How are results and discussion sections of a scientific paper related to the introduction and methods? How are these sections different?

10) Should additional references be used for a results and discussion section (i.e. references not cited in the introduction)? Why or why not?

And choose one of these;

How do plants fight off disease?
Do plants have an immune system like animals do? If so, explain how it works and/or how it differs.
What are evolutionary trade-offs in plants? What is a trade-off that plants sometimes make?
What are examples of ecological defenses that plants have against disease?
What is the importance of chemical defenses in plants to human society?
What is integrated pest management? How is it used to fight insect pests of plants?
What is the difference between inducible and constitutive defenses in plants?
Provide an example of an important plant disease and describe its impact in your state.
