Duck Weed Lab Write Up Your laboratory write up will consist of a formalized process using the typical Scientific Format Abstract Introduction Methodology Results Discussion Literature Cited Abstract: This is a one paragraph summary of your experiment and the Result/Brief Interpretation of what it means. Abbreviated Example: Duck weed (Genus species) is a very small flowering vascular plant that reproduces by asexual budding new plants. To determine how various chemicals might impact growth, I developed an experiment which tested xxxx to see its impacts on growth. I added xxx of xxxx and xxx of xxx to experimental chambers and monitored growth for 2 weeks against a control. My results showed ……… These results suggest …. Introduction An introduction in scientific papers is about why the research is important. For this report, 2-3 paragraphs, talking about duckweed biology and ecology (examples of ideas include: life history, asexual vs. sexual reproduction, global and local problems with them, etc). You should also include some background about the substances you used in your experiments and potential impacts on duckweed and duckweed growth. Lastly, you can summarize or clearly state the hypotheses you are testing. There is no specific best answer, this is up to you to develop. You should be using 2-4 references to support your introduction. Use Google Scholar on the topics for your review. Methodology (Paragraph form) Basic experimental design talking about the variables you chose, the conditions of the experiment (control vs. experimental treatments), the ‘length of the experiment, how many replicates, how you collected data (e.g., counted lobed individuals daily). You may want to add a photo or two of your experiment showing your setup. Some things to think about. Did you adjust your results (e.g., for trials which died, they were eliminated from future averages)? Please know that zeroes (0) are valid data points and do not have to be eliminated, but sometimes they are for specific reasons. Sometimes a tank just dies (too hot, too cold if the heater broke, etc…) or the cup got knocked over, and it is OK to eliminate it from the experiment. If these things happen you explain them here (and reiterate in the results). Results (Paragraph form) This section is where your graphs and tables will be presented. However, they are accompanied by a written paragraph describing the results [Example: When I tested the response of adding x substance, the growth of plants increases/decreased/stayed the same for 3 days then …(see, Figure 1 a-d (Figures 1-4), Table XXX) and it was much (higher, lower) than the controls.]. Results are relatively ‘dry’ and matter of fact. You just report your results here, you do not interpret what that means, that is for the Discussion. Discussion This is the section of the research paper where you interpret and explain your results. How did your results from the variables you used differ from the controls is the primary point here for this report. Make reference to the graphs/tables in your results section to support your interpretation. This is also the place where external research sources are used to compare your results to other scientific studies. If you are using bleach, you might search for bleach impacts on plant growth rates. The same idea for any variables or concentrations you used. This section should include 3-4 paragraphs: 1. Reintroduce the biology of duckweed and asexual growth; 2. Interpretation of YOUR results; 3. Compare YOUR basic results (increases, decreases, optimal conditions etc..) to other research (at least 2-3 external peer reviewed papers used to compare your results); 4. Conclusions and (‘future ideas?)) Literature Cited Full citations of the papers/information used in your report.
Need to write a lab write up of this project below i provided the materials i used as well as my results and what i did and what i used. In the files i am attaching i am attaching the prompt of how the professor wants the lab write up done. if needed more information please let me know i dont think the words I, we, you can be used the professor does not want that. Materials: 6 empty plastic cups bag full of duckweed pipet root beer water salt water i used 2 cups straight water and added approximately 15 little blobs of duckweed in each cup. (1ML water in one cup with 15 blobs of duck weed, 3 Ml water in other cup with 15 blobs of duck weed). i then took 2 more cups used salt water and added 15 little blobs of duckweed in each cup. (1ML saltwater in one cup with 15 blobs of duck weed, 3 Ml saltwater in other cup with 15 blobs of duck weed). i then used 2 more finals cups used root beer and added 15 little blobs of duckweed in each cup. (1ML root beer in one cup with 15 blobs of duck weed, 3 Ml rootbeer in other cup with 15 blobs of duck weed). Day 1: every cup still had all 15 little blobs of duckweed in them greenish looking. day 2: salt water cups and water cups full of duck weed still looked greenish and alive . rootbeer cups started to look dry and brown (the duckweed) day3: plain h20 cups with duck weed were still healthy and green. Salt water cups with duckweed were starting to discolor. root beer cups with duckweed were looking stale and brown and discolored day 4: water cups still had healthy duckweed in it maybe 1-2 discolored. salt water cups still had some duck weed in it more discolored. root beer duckweed had completely died off and turned brown and stale. day 5: the root beer duckweed completely died off and there was nothing floating or can be seen. Water cups with duckweed were still alive few discolored but still alive. salt water duckweed was discolored but 2-3 were still floating. day 6: salt water cups the duckweed started to turn brown and stale. The water cups still had 4-5 duckweed blobs in it that were green and some were brown that fell to the bottom of the cup. day 7: salt water cups completely died off. Water cups there were a few duckweed still floating but they were discolored almost brown color looking stale. Day 8: water cups full of duckweed turned brown and stale. by day 8 there were no duckweed cups remaining alive. I put it out in the sun everyday from 10am-6pm for sunlight.
