Executive Summary

In this assignment, you will propose a quality improvement initiative from your place of employment that could easily be implemented if approved. Assume you are presenting this program to the board for approval of funding. Write an executive summary (750-1,000 words) to present to the board, from which the board will make its decision to fund your program or project. Include the following:

The purpose of the quality improvement initiative.

The target population or audience.

The benefits of the quality improvement initiative.

The interprofessional collaboration that would be required to implement the quality improvement initiative.

The cost or budget justification.

The basis upon which the quality improvement initiative will be evaluated.

Prepare this assignment according to the guidelines found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. An abstract is not required.

The quality improvement initiative that I am going to propose at my place of employment is hourly rounding. I work in an eleven-bed emergency department and feel that this process improvement initiative will be of great value. It will increase our patient safety, decrease call light use, decrease patient complaints, decrease our patient elopement, and improve our patient satisfaction scores (Meade et al., 2006).

We currently use an EMR and have been told that we should round every hour and hit the visit button, but it is rarely done. Many of our patient complaints involve wait times and patients stating they were not informed of what they were waiting for. The pandemic is exhausting our staffing and patient flow processes, and we now have an increased number of unhappy patients. We have a strict no visitor policy and have patient families waiting outside that are also feeling uninformed. It is easy to forget to call families or round when it is extremely busy and short-staffed.

I am proposing that we implement the use of communication/care boards in patient rooms. The nurse or tech will update these boards every hour while rounding. Patients will know what they are waiting for and it will be an opportunity to check if the patient needs anything. I also feel that while in the room, the staff could use the opportunity to call family and we could even buy a few tablets to be able to Facetime with families. I know that this will be a struggle during busy times, but this is when our patients need to be rounded on.

To monitor the implementation of this initiative, the nurse manager, supervisors, and charge nurses will round and check the boards on a regular basis. While rounding on the boards, this will be an opportunity for management to also checks on patients. The nurse manager will also track patient satisfaction scores, patient complaints, and the number of patient elopements to determine if the initiative is improving our process.
