Exploring a Problem with Gender in Art
Overview: Using ONLY assigned primary and secondary readings, write a 4-5 page essay that explores a problem related to gender and art.
Assignment:
Write an argument essay that explores a problem related to gender and art (visual, performing, or literary) using at least 3 and no more than 5 of the assigned primary and secondary texts (including the novels, poems, film, essays, and criticism). You may NOT use outside sources without instructor approval.
Important Components:
Audience Awareness—you should assume an audience of college educated readers who are not recently familiar with the texts you’re using, so you should be careful to contextualize quoted material for your reader.
Introduction/Thesis—your essay’s introductory paragraph should establish your topic (what you’re writing about), your purpose (why you’re writing/a question), and a clear, unified, unifying, debatable thesis.
Supporting Points—the body of your essay should provide logically organized and developed points that are clearly connected to your thesis (using transitions) and that are in turn backed by ample, specific textual evidence. These points should synthesize evidence from multiple sources (avoid organizing your essay by source).
Counter Arguments and Rebuttals—your essay should also consider likely objections or counter arguments to your thesis and/or your interpretations of your various observations; additionally, your essay should provide rebuttals/refutations for those objections.
Conclusion—your essay should conclude by reminding your reader of your purpose, topic, and argument and by suggesting the broader implications of your argument to this course.

“Less than 5% of the artists in the Modern Art Sections are women, but 85% of the nudes are female”(CITATION). When looking at art throughout the decades women have been in the forefront but not for the reasons they should be. Seeing women as an object and source of appeal to men has been a common theme, and I feel as if this theme will be never-ending.
