One of the most exciting scientific accomplishments of this century is the Human Genome Project which is the cataloging of human genes. This will lead to a great understanding of the human body and advances medical science.

One of the most important findings is that while human beings differ in outward appearance, the genetic structure of all human beings is 99.9% identical. These researchers agree that there is only one race, the human race.

However, people continue to struggle with the concept of appreciating diversity, and discrimination and prejudice still exist in many forms. For example, you may have experienced discrimination because of your ethnic group, religion, height, weight, gender, sexual preference, disability, or even academic skills.

Watch the following documentary in its entirety, then watch the two commercials below.

For this paper:

1. Give an example of a circumstance where you have experienced or witnessed discrimination.

2. Express your ideas not only on the content of the commercial but on the manner of comments they received.

3. Comment on what the Blue-Eyed People at the Department of Corrections learned and discuss their reactions.

4. Then, discuss the understanding that was gained from both sides and why 51 years after this teacher conducted this experiment discrimination is still a predominant problem in this country.

In this video, Jane Elliot discriminates against students with brown eyes one day and then discriminates against students with blue eyes the next. Then she takes this to the Department of Corrections and conducts the same experiment on adults. This is a great way to show the harmful effects of discrimination and the detrimental effects on learning when people are told that they are inferior.
