Final Review

Answer one of the following prompts, in essay form. Answers should be about 4-5 double-spaced pages, or about 1200-1500 words, and should be properly organized into essay format with an introduction, conclusion, and clear thesis. Don’t worry if you go OVER the suggested length, although answers that are significantly under the required length will lose points.

Note: If you would like comments on your final exam, please indicate this by writing COMMENT PLEASE at the top of the exam. Otherwise, I will simply provide a grade.

A. Drawing upon the first three chapters of Marsh’s God’s Long Summer compare how Fannie Lou Hamer, Sam Bowers, and Douglas Hudgins each drew their Christian faith to interpret race relations in the segregated South. What understandings of the divine, and of society, did each of these individuals bring to the table? Be sure to pay attention to how each of these leaders interpreted the Bible verse, Ephesians 6:12.

B. Since its formation in the late 19th century, the Ku Klux Klan has reemerged several times throughout U.S. history. Compare three manifestations of this Christian-inspired hate group: the emergence of the Klan during the early 20th century, as described by Tucker; the ideology of Sam Bowers in the 1960s; and the contemporary ideology of the American Christian Dixie Knights of the KKK, as expressed on their website: (Links to an external site.)Pay close attention to the role of Christianity within each of these moments in KKK history as you formulate your answer.

All direct quotations must be placed in quotation marks with the page number listed in parentheses, along with the author’s name, unless you mention the author’s name in the same sentence. You do not need a bibliography unless you cite sources from outside of class. Do not start a sentence with a quotation. Here is an example of proper citation:

As Ines Talamantez notes, “cultural continuity today is also reflected in the way that myths are told” (145).

While a few well-chosen quotations can strengthen your answers, please avoid excessive dependence on quotations (no more than 20% of your work).

A note on plagiarism & academic dishonesty

Keep in mind that any phrase longer than four words that are directly taken from another work must be in quotation marks, or it will be considered plagiarism. Please consult the handout on avoiding plagiarism posted in the “Course Links & Tools” module for more guidance.
