Financial Statement Analysis

For your final project, you will conduct a financial analysis comparing two publicly traded companies in the same business or industry. The firms should have a global reach. They can be either peers or in a vertical alignment (for example, Apple and IBM or Apple and Intel). To support and inform your analysis, you will need to locate and examine a variety of information, including the following for each firm:

Company profile.
Company financial statements.
Company managerial makeup.
Applicable accounting statement footnotes.
Major market competitors.
The state of the economy in which the firms are operating.
The global context in which the firms operate.
A central part of your evaluation will be a ratio analysis of each firm using balance sheets and income statements for the most recent (annual or quarterly) period. Be certain to assess both firms using a “same period” (same year or same quarter) analysis. Your analysis will largely flow from this information.

Your project paper should include the following elements:

Title page.
Part 1: Company Introductions and Background.
Include the descriptions of your chosen publicly traded companies as well as the following contextual information.
An analysis of the external environment of the firms, including:

Major competitors.
Environmental, regulatory, legal, and ethical context and challenges.
Global context and challenges.
An analysis of the internal environment of each firm, including:
Managerial makeup.
Organizational makeup.
Regulatory, legal, and ethical challenges.
Any other information you feel it would be helpful to include.
Part 2: Financial Statement Analysis.
For each firm, include the inputs and resulting calculations for the following:
Current ratio.
Working capital.
Inventory turnover ratio (if applicable).
Debt-to-equity ratio.
Return on assets (ROA).
Return on equity (ROE).
Earnings per share.
Dividend payout and retention percentages (if dividend paid).
Dividend yield (presuming a common dividend is paid).
Current (most recent) balance sheet.
Current (most recent) income statement.
Part 3: Financial Analysis.
For your analysis, include the following:
An evaluation of the financial position and managerial effectiveness of your chosen companies based upon the financial analysis in part 2.
An evaluation of the impact of each firm’s capital, cash flow, and overall weighted average cost of capital (WACC) on its financial status.
An evaluation of the effects of market risks and the firms’ organizational efficiencies on their ability to attract capital from both equity and debt markets.
Your summary analysis (good or bad) of each firm and which of the two firms is best deploying the assets and cash flows available to said firm.
Figures (optional).
Appendices: Include the financial statements that support your ratio analysis.
In addition, your project paper is expected to meet the following criteria:

Written communication: Written communication is free of errors that detract from the overall message.
APA formatting: Resources and citations are formatted according to APA (6th edition) style and formatting.
