Formal Essay

The first draft of Formal Essay #2 will be an outline of your essay. You should think about things you learned from Understanding Rhetoric, the chapter “Argument: Beyond Pro and Con,” like “arguable statements” and adequate evidence.

The research paper should grow out of your MMA topic and seek to answer a question that has not yet been tackled or addressed by media or academics.

An outline is a “blueprint” or “plan” for your paper. It helps you to organize your thoughts and arguments. A good outline can make conducting research and then writing the paper very efficient. Your outline page must include your:

-Paper Title
-Research question and Thesis statement
-Major points/arguments indicated by Roman numerals (i.e., I, II, III, IV, V, etc.)
-Support for your major points (evidence), indicated by capital alphabetic letter (i.e., A, B, C, D, E, etc.)
-Reasoning for each piece of evidence you use should be indicated by a lower alphabetic letter (a. b. c. d. e. etc.)

Roman numeral I should be your “Introduction”. In the introduction portion of your paper, you’ll want to tell your reader what your paper is about and then tell what your paper hopes to prove (your thesis). So, an Introduction gives an overview of the topic and your thesis statement.

Roman numeral II, III, IV, V, VI should be for your body paragraphs, and state the topic sentence (arguable statement) of the paragraph. Each topic sentence should include supporting details from the texts that support the topic sentence (e.g. quotes, facts, examples, statistics, anecdotes, etc).

The final Roman numeral should be your “Conclusion”. In the conclusion, you summarize what you have told your reader and express what YOU have learned from writing this essay.

So, your outline should look something like (but with more paragraphs);

I-Introduction: State your research question and thesis (an answer to your question in the form of a claim)

II-Body para: An arguable statement (claim) related to your thesis
A. Evidence to support the claim (include the exact information you plan to use to support your claim). Copy quotes, paraphrase examples, etc. with a proper citation
a. Reasoning: Explain your reasoning. How does the example support your claim?

III-Body para: An arguable statement (claim) related to the para before and related to your thesis
A. Evidence to support the claim (include the exact information you plan to use to support your claim). Copy quotes, paraphrase examples, etc. with a proper citation
a. Reasoning: Explain your reasoning. How does the example support your claim?

To receive 10 points your outline must:
-State your research question and thesis statement (worth 1 point)
-State a topic sentence/claims for each body paragraph (6 body paragraphs minimum). (worth 4 points)
-Include supporting details from the texts you find (research) for each topic sentence and examples and details from your primary source study. Do not give me page numbers. You must actually include the example, quotes, data, in the outline. Plus, cite these supporting details whenever you use information from any of the texts to inform your ideas. You may use the research (articles) you have used for your MMAs, but you must also use the peer reviewed article you found on the CUNY database for MMA #3 and relevant portions from your primary source study. (worth 4 points)
-Include a Works Cited page (worth 1 point)
