You are to provide a thorough overview of the novel assigned. As with the previous assignment this should be roughly 5 to 6- pages. In addition to your overview compare the messages in the 2 novels you have been assigned. Do they differ? If so how? Are the authors’ giving the same ‘warning’ in these novels of where we may be heading?What is the similar theme? What is different? What is the possible relevance to this course?

This week is a reading week for you to complete the The Book of the Unnamed Midwife. As you finish the novel, look at current events as well including the climate crisis we find ourselves in and rollbacks across the globe of women’s rights.

In addition (we will visit domestic violence against women in a later module), consider the following:

As many countries implement measures to address the spread of the coronavirus,
including mandated lockdowns and stay-at-home orders, the global problem of violence against
women has been exacerbated, so much so it has been termed a Shadow Pandemic (Mlambo-
Ngcuka 2020). Emerging data indicates that this increase is particularly acute when it comes to
intimate partner and domestic violence, with reports to helplines registering an increase in calls
reflecting an uptick in demand for services (Almeron 2020; Mohan 2020). While many states
have recognized the problem and allocated resources to help address the issue, this does not
negate the reality that violence against women remains one of the worst documented human
rights violations with a global cost of approximately 1.5 trillion USD. As noted by the United
Nations, in the twelve months prior to the pandemic 243 million women and girls reported
experiencing physical or sexual violence at the hands of an intimate partner (Mlambo-Ngcuka
2020), 70 percent of women have been victims of harassment (World Health Organization 2013),
women and girls account for 72 percent of all trafficking victims, girls account for three in every
four cases of child trafficking (UNODC 2018), and in 2019 alone at least 15 million girls aged
between 15-19 years reported having experienced rape in their lifetime (United Nations Children
Fund 2017). The problem is so pervasive UN Women (2014) have likened violence against
women to a global pandemic in its’ own right.
Tasks:

1. Begin to contemplate everyday language and how it reifies gender inequality, stereotypes and patriarchal relations of power (e.g., whore, slut, pussy, dog, he cried like a a ‘girl’,etc.)

2. To see how mundane replications of misogyny still are see this brief news story about the UK.

UK government withdraws public information campaign telling women to “stay home” during the pandemic and do domestic chores.
It depicted women doing household chores and looking after children while the only man in the graphic sat on a sofa.
“This infographic does not reflect the Government’s view and has been removed from the campaign,” a spokesperson said.

The UK government has withdrawn a public information campaign urging people to “stay home” during the coronavirus pandemic, after criticism of its stereotyped depiction of women doing domestic chores and looking after children.

A government spokesperson said the advert had been withdrawn because “it does not reflect the government’s view on women.”

The advert is part of the government’s advertising campaign to encourage people in England to comply with the national COVID-19 lockdown.

It features a cartoon depiction of four houses. The first shows a man sitting on a sofa with a woman and a child, while the remaining three depict a woman ironing, looking after a child, and mopping the floor.

The advert had drawn intense criticism on social media, where users said it promoted outdated gender stereotypes.

Dr. Pragya Agarwal, a behavioural and data scientist, said the advert reinforced “the view that it is a woman’s job to homeschool, clean, do the childcare. Are the men out there fighting a war or something?”

Another person wrote: “As a scientist working on this terrible disease, it feels like a kick in the teeth to see women represented like their only place is at home.”

Downing Street refused to comment on which department had been responsible for producing and approving the graphic.
