Free-Writing Exercise about an art exhibition: First, find one exhibition that you can (preferably) visit in person that you would like to write about for the duration of the course. Make sure to select an exhibition that you will be interested in for the duration of the course. Students may choose to write on an exhibition that features a single artist or artwork, or on group exhibition with many works. It is preferable that the student can see the exhibition in person, but if no exhibitions are in their geography area, or they cannot travel for other reasons, they may review an exhibition that is online, where all the materials in the exhibition are available or can be made to be available to the student through the exhibiting venue.
Next, on one page write the name(s) of the artist(s)t, title(s) of the work(s), medium(s), dimensions and year of completion of each work of art in the exhibition at the top of the page. Make sure to include images because you’ll be writing about this exhibition for the duration of the course and you’ll want to have images of the works to refer too. Finally, write down everything you see, think, feel, experience, etc., in a free association manner as part of a stream of consciousness exercise.
Do not be concerned with format, with making an argument, etc., just record your responses, thoughts and insights while looking at the works in the exhibition. Make sure to fill up at least one page of thoughts which are your first impressions about everything in the exhibition. Try to be as descriptive as possible about what you are seeing.
