The student is required to develop a fictitious patient who needs teaching related to the health topic. This fictitious patient must be approved by the instructor prior to writing the paper. A paragraph introducing the patient should include name, age, living arrangements, educational level, monthly income, support system and past medical history.

This assignment involves a written paper (8-10 pages, not including the title page or the reference page). The paper is to be typed 12 font, Times New Roman, and referenced in APA format. This is a scholarly paper is to be written in complete sentences and paragraphs, not columns or care plan format. DO NOT use abbreviations unless first explained in the text of the paper. Take time to proof read, check punctuation, spelling and grammar. Consideration to the patient’s age, living arrangements, educational level, occupation, income, support system, health care insurance status, past medical history, and health literacy level, should be addressed throughout the paper.

1. Introduction to the fictitious patient, including name, age, living arrangements, educational level, occupation, monthly income, support system, past medical history, health literacy level and any special considerations related to the patient teaching. The assigned topic should be incorporated into the introduction (ex- patient wants to start exercising). An explanation of the diagnosis or problem should be provided. Students are to include whether or not the patient has health insurance coverage. One statement of a nursing diagnosis written in NANDA format should be included. All patients will have the nursing diagnosis of Knowledge deficit related to ____________ as evidenced by_________________________.

2. State learner outcomes- one long term general outcome and a minimum of three short term outcomes. Outcomes must be specific, measurable and time bound. Outcomes need to be individualized and appropriate to the specific needs of the fictitious patient. State content that will be taught to the patient. This information should be derived from researching the topic and should be appropriate for the individual patient. The long term goal should be broad, related to overall management of the problem. Whereas the short term goals will be steps toward achieving the long term goal.

3. State the teaching strategies that will be utilized to provide appropriate teaching for the particular patient. Rationale for the strategies must be included. Rationale should be based on information related to teaching, learning and the specific needs of the fictitious patient. Address the teaching environment (where the teaching will take place) and whether anyone else will be included in the teaching (patient’s support person, family, friends, or other health care providers). Offer an explanation for the choices made related to the environment and inclusion of other people. 4. State methods that will be used for evaluation to determine if learning outcomes were met. Methods should be appropriate to the individual patient, the content and method used for teaching. Since this is a fictitious patient, develop a fictitious outcome and state a possible outcome that could occur after teaching is implemented. Identify if the outcomes are dependent upon any economic or financial factors for the individual patient. Comment on the impact of the patient’s health literacy level on outcomes. Identify future needs, state whether the material taught needs to be reinforced, whether any other support persons need to be involved or whether the patient for more in depth information on the support.
