High school history curriculum controversy
Your final in HIST 100 is either a research project or a paper. Both will require you to complete research and engage deeply with the subject. Below is a list of American historical controversies and/or “culture wars.”
This semester we explored the divisive nature of public American history. Edward Linenthal explained the failures of the Enola Gay Exhibit by saying that the museum failed to balance the tragic and heroic narrative of history. The task of this paper is to:
Prewriting:
1) Explore your selected topic in detail.
2) Determine the significant voices in the debate.
3) Articulate the arguments of various voices (at least two).
Writing:
4) Craft a thesis that argues your position on the topic.
5) Outline your research topic.
6) Support your argument and explain the major sides of the argument.
7) Explain what side has the stronger argument and why you think that particular side has a stronger argument.
8) Conclude with your final analysis and context of this topic with our class.
Paper requirements:
1) The paper must be in MLA format.
a. You must include accurate in-text citations and a full works cited page. To review MLA citations and format click on the following link: Purdue Owl
b. Failure to use MLA in-text citations or include a works cited page will result in a failing grade.
2) The paper needs to be at least 4 pages in length with organized body paragraphs that are guided by clear topic sentences.
3) You need to research and integrate at least four sources in the paper. Please see the Canvas assignment page for research links and tips.
4) Be sure to proofread before submitting your final draft.
