Historical Influences from 1900 to the Present

Focus:

During the second half of the semester, we have studied three periods of British literature leading up to our own time: Edwardian, Modern, and Postmodern. While we have addressed a variety of themes our discussions often return to the function of language within a specific historical period. Trace one theme throughout the Edwardian, Modern, and Postmodern periods in relation to one text from each era. How does each work represent the ideals of the period in which it was written based on the treatment of the theme?

There are three requirements for this assignment:

First, you must choose ONE work from each of the three periods. That is, one work must be Edwardian, one must be Modern, and one must be Postmodern.
Second, you need to choose THREE different genres. In other words, you cannot choose three poems. Right off the bat, you know that one of your choices must be a novel since we only cover Harry Potter in the Postmodern unit.
Lastly, you must cite at least ONE outside source in support of your argument. While you may use the lecture notes and the background information in the course as support, you must also include on critical source (sorry, no Wikipedia entries or online sources unless they are PDFs of actual scholarly articles) as support. How much additional support you want to use is up to you. But, you will be held to the standards of responsible research and documentation.

You must include a Works Cited page listing your sources. The Works Cited page will not count toward total page requirement for this assignment. In addition to re-reading “How to Quote Poetry,” please consult with any MLA style guide for correct form in essay presentation, parenthetical citations, and Works Cited entries.

Requirements:
Your paper must be at least 5-8 pages long (no less will be accepted).

You must follow the standard MLA style formatting:

Time New Roman – 12-point font
1 inch margins all around
Double Spaced (but no more than double spaced)
You must have parenthetical citations
You must have a Works Cited page
Due Date: May 4th
Submitting Policy:
You will need to save your document in Word document format with the following file label: Last name_First Initial_P2.

For example, for a student named John Smith, his file would be named: Smith_J_P2

Submit your document using the digital drop box by the deadline specified in the Course Schedule. Emailed papers will not be accepted.
