History and Trends in Nursing Reflection Essay

There are specific articles and lecture notes that the in-text citations are from. I need to email them to you since I cannot add them here.

Overview
The intention behind writing this Reflection Essay is to give you the opportunity to identify and discuss topics from the materials presented in this course that impacted your thinking about the history of nursing. In this essay you are expected to identify no less than five topics and then add your own thoughts and ideas, and explain why they were important to you. Please note: it is essential that I hear your unique voice in this paper; I do not want a mere summary of the materials presented in this course, doing so will not earn you many points for your efforts.

Structure of the essay

Pick no less than five topics from this course that struck you as worthy of discussion to include in your paper. However, there are two exceptions: you may not use any information from your week ten folder: Vietnam Nurses, or your week fourteen folder: Challenges for nurses in the 21st century, in your paper; any other topics are fair game.

Your essay needs to have structure, therefore, you should begin with an opening paragraph, which includes a perspective statement, followed by the main body paragraphs that discuss your chosen topics (with supporting quotes/citations), and a concluding statement.

The opening paragraph may be brief, only a couple of sentences are necessary but it needs to offer an overall statement of your perspective, which 1is based on the topics you have chosen to write about. A perspective statement is essential as it guides your reader through the trajectory of the paper. And please remember, this is a history course, therefore time matters and you must discuss your topics in chronological order!

The following example will give you an idea of what a perspective might look like:

The topics I will address in this paper are Florence Nightingale’s continuing influence on modern nursing; the legacy of apprenticeship style training programs; the challenges African American nurses faced and overcame; the introduction of ADN programs, and finally, the expansion of nursing’s power to control their practice due to the introduction of nurse practitioner programs.

Your body paragraphs should start with a topicsentence, they identify the main idea of the paragraph and state the point(s) you wish to make about your topic. Each body paragraph should be between 5 and 7 sentences in length, never longer— long sentences make a paper’s ideas difficult to follow and fatigue the reader. The following is an example of what a topic sentence might look like:

Florence Nightingale single handedly changed the ideology of nursing in the mid-1800s; her influence set the standard for how the profession would evolve over time and can still be felt today.

Each body paragraph must include adequate in-text citations to support your claims (except the opening and concluding paragraphs). Therefore, you should aim to include no less than one in each of your paragraphs; you may use quotations from my lecture notes, the chapter excerpts, essays, articles, or the textbook in your paper. Examples are as follows:

•LECTURE NOTES: When using quotes from my lecture notes you shouldprovide the week and page number after it, like this:

“Education took place in institutions of higher education and the demands of patient care did not intrude on the learning process as often occurred in diploma programs.“ (Week nine lecture notes, p. 2)

2•BOOK CHAPTER EXCERPTS, ARTICLES, AND ESSAYS: When using quotes taken from any of the articles/essays/book chapter excerpts, you need to provide the name and page number afterwards, it should look like this:

“The social construction of gender roles within the black community could not afford to confine black women to as narrow a band of occupations and jobs as was the case in the larger white society.” (BlackWomeninWhite,4)

•COURSE TEXTBOOK: After any quotes taken from your course textbook, you need to provide the name of the textbook, the author’s names, chapter and page number. It should look like this:

“Despite some acceptance of males into a few established nursing institutions, there were significant restrictions placed upon them.” (A History of American Nursing, Judd and Sitzman, ch. 9, pg. 204)

The conclusion of your essay may be brief, only a couple of sentences are required to wrap things up. You do not need to restate the main topics addressed in your essay, instead I would like you to leave me with something meaningful and interesting to think about, e.g., your overall impressions about what you learned this quarter. What were your main take-aways from this class?

Finally, please remember, good grammar and sentence structure are essential for the outcome of a good paper. Furthermore, I also expect your paper to be proofread and spell-checked before you submit it. If you fail to do this simple task, you will receive a poor grade on your paper.
