Identifying an Unknown Bacterial Culture Lab Report
Description
This assignment is a lab report for an experiment where we conducted tests on a gram negative bacterium and a gram positive bacterium in order to determine their identities. This lab report is broken up into two smaller halves of the experiment.
UNKNOWN PROJECT SCHEDULE
Week 1, Sept. 14 – 20 (Lab 4)
Observe the Gram stains of your assigned unknown mixed culture and isolates (emailed to you by your TA) and record your observations using the document provided (Unknown Observations 1).
Complete Unknown Assessment 1 using the document provided.
Observe the three streak plates of your unknowns on MAC, PEA and BAP (Unknown 131 Lab Report Initial Data) and record your observations using the document provided (Unknown Observations 1).
Week 2, Sept. 21 – 27 (Lab 5)
Decide which biochemical tests you want to perform and place your order for these tests.
Week 3, Oct. 5 – 11 (Lab 7):
Observe your chosen biochemical tests for each isolate and determine the identity of your two unknown bacteria.
Week 4, Oct. 12 – 18 (Lab 8):
Turn in Unknown Project Reports (two mini-reports worth 100 points total)
Your unknown culture identification project should consist of two mini-reports based on the bacterial cultures you have identified. You should write a separate mini-report for each bacterium (each report is worth 50 points). Both mini-reports must be submitted to Turnitin separately before the due date and time. All reports should be typewritten and double-spaced. All sections (excluding the reference section) of the paper must be written in paragraph form and in the appropriate voice and tense. Section headers (RESULTS, DISCUSSION/ CONCLUSION, and REFERENCES) should be provided. Use the provided title pages for each mini-report (above) and include your electronic signature (typed name is fine) below the integrity statements. Ten percent (5 points) will be subtracted from each mini-report for each day it is late. TAs will not accept emailed reports.
I would like special attention to be payed to the requirement that the screenshots be included in the report. Everything you need will be given to you. I would like the page requirement met before the screenshots are put in. Also, references need to be cited in ASM (American Society of Microbiology) style. Citation Guidelines will be included.
