BASIC PAPER STRUCTURE: 1. Introduction
a. Grab the reader’s attention.
b. Explain what the problem/issue is.
c. Give background information about the problem/issue.
d. Include a reasonable thesis (your main conclusion, the claim to be supported) that clearly states your position/stance.
2. Body a. Clearly and accurately summarize the author’s argument.
i. Make sure to include his/her thesis.
3 ii. Make sure to include the main reasons given in support of his/her thesis.
b. Effectively evaluate the author’s argument.
i. Make explicit any problems with the reasons given in support of the author’s position.
ii. Make explicit why any of the author’s claims are correct
c. Effectively present your own argument defending your position making sure to avoid any problematic reasoning.
i. You may want to restate your thesis.
ii. Present your well-reasoned argument: Give good reasons/evidence to support your thesis including further support for your main reasons/evidence, this may include examples to help illustrate your claims.
iii. Effectively respond to possible objections (the strongest and/or the most common).
3. Conclusion a. Restate your thesis (generally, in different words) and its importance.
b. Include some sort of concluding remarks:
i. A call to action
ii. A story illustrating the relevance of your argument
iii. Discuss
