Your assignment this week is to prepare a white paper. Identify a current social issue that involves the concepts of power, privilege, and/or oppression of an individual or group of individuals within society. Explain the social work skills needed to provide culturally-relevant treatment services to a client system (individual, family, or group) and the significant considerations a social worker must be cognizant of when providing treatment services. Investigate any related government policies that may influence your explanation. Examples may include working with a transgender individual who planned on military service but now faces a ban on enlistment, or a DACA student unable to continue college because of current immigration policies. Points will be assigned to reflect the depth of thinking displayed, resources identified, and integration of social constructs and knowledge of cultural considerations in outlining treatment planning for the client system. Support your assignment with at least three scholarly resources. In addition to these specified resources, other appropriate scholarly resources, including seminal articles, may be included. Length: 5-7 pages, not including title and reference pages Your assignment should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts presented in the course by providing new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic. Your response should reflect scholarly writing and current APA standards. Be sure to adhere to Northcentral University’s Academic Integrity Policy. Notes on how to prepare/create a white paper How do I write a white paper? from The Handy English Grammar Answer Book The “white paper,” originally used to describe a government policy, has become a standard form of communication in the business world. White papers are used to describe a particular problem and propose a specific solution to that problem. White papers typically include the following: Begin the white paper with a general title, e.g., “White Paper on Network Slowdown.” State the main problem your paper is addressing in one or two direct sentences (e.g., sales are decreasing, network speed is too slow, customers are complaining). Include any necessary background information, taking care to consider your audience’s need for detail. You do not want your white paper to be either too simple or too complex for your readers. Write the body of the white paper, which will typically range from 1–5 pages. Begin the body by elaborating on the problem you identified in the introduction. Follow with the solutions you are proposing, including any step-by-step implementation that will be needed. Close with a summary that reviews the problem, your suggested solution, and the anticipated results. Upload your document, and then click the Submit to Dropbox button. Due Date Feb 28, 2021 11:59 PM
Adding the weeks reading Week 6 Reading Week 6 Power, Privilege, and Oppression Related to Diversity and Difference The concepts of power, privilege, and oppression refer to the status of one group over another within this society and most commonly refer to issues of social inequality. Racial and ethnic groups, age, disability, gender identity, and religious choice can all be the basis for oppression or privilege within this culture. Privilege is usually granted by membership in a group, such as white males, or by socioeconomic status. Privilege often is unacknowledged by the members of the groups that possess it because they may not realize it, or it isn’t associated with something they considered, such as having a college education. In this society, college is a privilege for those who have the intellectual ability to study in higher education and the ability to afford the cost. It is often not recognized as a privilege by those who have access to education, but it is for those who do not. Oppression does not automatically spring from groups who have privilege, but oppression may be associated with unacknowledged power or social class. These dynamics may be on a larger social level of class and economic well-being, or they may be on a more personal level, such as how a professional social worker interacts with clerical staff in an agency setting. The structures of power are reflected in organizations and social policies, and the task of social workers is often to address the oppression that results from social inequity. Areas of diversity and difference present the most common context for power, oppression, and differences in privilege. All construct barriers to optimum development and functioning for individuals and families. Be sure to review this week’s resources carefully. You are expected to apply the information from these resources when you prepare your assignments.
