interview

Manager Profile Format Directions
This profile will have you interview a manager with the specific set of questions provided. In addition to the ten questions I give you, you are to add five questions of your own to complete the assignment. The objective of this project is to have you discuss thoroughly each of the questions with your chosen manager. One sentence responses are not discussions. It is your job, if necessary, to rephrase questions to generate discussion. NO RELATIVES ALLOWED AND YOU CANNOT INTERVIEW YOURSELF (0.0 on the project if you do) and the person must manage at least 5 people. Also you cannot give the questions to someone and have them type up their responses to it (also a 0.0).

In order to get the most out of this project I recommend that you try to interview someone that is not your direct supervisor – maybe the next level manager or a manager at a level you would like to have some day. You will most likely discover more insights to management issues.

The format required on this project includes a cover page with the following:
1) the name of the individual interviewed
2) the name of the company
3) the phone number where this person may be reached
4) the date of the interview and
5) your name.

Write every question first, then provide, in your own words, the manager’s discussed response (double-spaced, 12 pt. font).

Complete this assignment with your reflection to the interview. For example, what did you learn? How did it fit within the context of our class discussion and text material? Do the interview responses match what you’ve read in the text? Were there any surprises? This reaction section should be about 350-500 words relating some of the interview back to text material – company culture, leadership style, motivational style, workforce diversity…
Plan at least 90 minutes for this interview.
Manager Profile Questions (add five of your own)

(In your responses identify the manager by his or her name, company worked for, and current position held)

1. What is your educational background and how has it helped prepare you for your current position?

2. Describe the progression of your career – which previous work experiences have contributed most to your career development and your ability to be successful in your current position?

3. Describe a typical day at work – how long is it? What do you spend most of your time doing?

4. What is your management philosophy? How do you communicate this to those you manage?

5. How has technology changed the way you manage?

6. What kind of planning process do you use in your work? (daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, yearly, long-range?)

7. What makes a manager an effective leader?

8. What qualities/characteristics do you value most in your employees? What specifics do you look for when interviewing prospective employees?

9. What do you enjoy most about your work? What do you like the least?

10. Where do you see your company in 10 years? Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Add five questions of your own and do not forget to include the REACTION section.
